Not being Twilight's replacement does not preclude being a new, important character. That said, it really doesn't mean much. Just look at all of the characters that got Royal Wedding singles.

His wings look really cool in that picture, and the shape of his face is better (not as elongated.) I much prefer his old coloring and mane style, though. This mane is kind of generic-looking.
