I know this has nothing to do with My Little Pony but I've been thinking about doing a liveblog for Captain N and the Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3. Do you guys think anyone would be interested in reading that? Does anyone here even know the show I'm talking about?

This idea occurred to me while discussing alicorns. Likely wrong, but hey, it's WMG.
Hypothesis: Celestia and Luna are Princess Platinum and Clover the Clever, respectively. They discovered the Elements of Harmony and used them to ascend to alicornhood and defeat Discord.
Evidence:
(All this assumes, of course, that the Hearth's Warming Eve play accurately reflects what really happened.)
For:
- Luna immediately recognizes Twilight's Nightmare Night costume of Starswirl the Bearded and can comment on its accuracy in detail ("Thou even got the bells right"). This suggests, albeit weakly, that she may have known Starswirl personally. However, we know that Starswirl predates Celestia and Luna, as the Hearth's Warming Eve episode establishes. But if by "before Princess Celestia and Princess Luna", Spike's monologue means before they existed as alicorns, rather than before their birth, this is compatible with Luna having known Starswirl personally, as Twilight-as-Clover states that Starswirl is her mentor.
- Rarity and Twilight are chosen — by Celestia — to play Princess Platinum and Clover the Clever in the Hearth's Warming Eve play. Their color schemes are similar to those of Celestia and Luna.
- Luna holds Starswirl's unfinished spellbook at the end of the Season 3 opener, rather than Celestia. This is somewhat unusual, as the book is to be used to test Celestia's pupil, rather than Luna's. However, if Luna generally keeps her mentor's unfinished work, then Celestia would need Luna to provide her with the book.
- Hearth's Warming Eve establishes that the unicorns controlled the motion of the sun and moon before Celestia and Luna existed. It would make sense for the royal family to be the specific unicorns to do so, although this is by no means established.
Against:
- At no point during Hearth's Warming Eve is it suggested that Clover is related to Platinum. The way in which Platinum treats her suggests strongly that she is a commoner, rather than royalty. It is possible that Luna and Celestia are not blood-sisters, but we have seen nothing to remotely suggest this.
- Discord's reign is stated to have occurred between the founding of Equestria and the royal sisters' ascent to power. However, this still fits the hypothesis if Discord's reign was comparatively short (<30 years or so).

I've seen speculation that she's Twilight's replacement, when we know that's not the case as we've been told multiple times Twilight's not going anywhere. She might be a Season 4 character, might just be one of those rare really cool looking toyline only ponies. Like Tealove and Firecracker Burst. We can't tell for now.
Not being Twilight's replacement does not preclude being a new, important character. That said, it really doesn't mean much. Just look at all of the characters that got Royal Wedding singles.

Sunset Shimmer is a cool name. I think she's an earth pony, but the picture's blurry and her coat color matches one of the colors in her mane, so there could be a horn there and I just can't see it.
