I just thought of something. Well, I actually thought of it during the season finale itself, but I forgot to mention it until now.
When Celestia references the Element of Honesty, she uses the word "integrity". I think this is important. I've seen a lot of times where, jokingly or otherwise, people point out times when Applejack isn't being completely truthful (outside of brainwashed Liarjack mode). Off the top of my head, when she tells Pinkie a blatant lie in
Party of One. ("Construction. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.") But consider her intention: the girls were planning a surprise party. Regardless of your stance on "white lies"
* (I personally think it's still wrong, and should be avoided if you reasonably can. But I digress.)
, you can't doubt that she was doing it in the spirit of friendship.
There's even the idea of honesty taken too far, as some fanfics
* (none of which I've read, admittedly)
have explored. Telling the full unfiltered truth, being completely open about what you think... but failing to consider how your words can cut deeply into people's feelings. We've seen Fluttershy do this with Rarity and Pinkie
* (Granted, we don't know whether she really felt that way or if it was just the anger talking, but just humor me for now.)
, and it was
not pretty.
In other words, when it comes to the Elements, there's really a whole lot more involved than just a simple interpretation of a single word. And I believe that goes for all the Elements, not just Honesty.
