She ascended without previously knowing anything about it, and afterwards she tasked Star Swirl with figuring out how exactly this works. He only managed to get halfway.
My favorite gag was when Pinkie took a drink for the purpose of doing a Spit Take. It added some levity to an otherwise ridiculously dramatic moment.
That was also one of my favorite moments. It's a shame they didn't have more funny moments to break it up.

@Syd: I think it must have been Nicole's voice — I remember seeing Meghan McCarthy (or someone else in the know) complimenting her on Twitter earlier this week for her performance.
If your fanon leads to unfortunate implications that could not possibly be canon truth in the context of the show, your fanon is wrong.
What was stupid about the plot? Everything made sense as far as I could tell.
Well she could have just kept casting the spell until everypony was back to normal by chance.

That's like trying to brute-force a six digit pin number.

And now its raining flaming zombie pirahanas everywhere.
@Perpetual: That might be true, but at the same time there's precisely zero reason to assume that she ever died in any sense. Even if her body was deconstructed by magic, it wouldn't be death or she'd have "died" every time she teleports.
We've still got the movie. If it takes place after this episode, it might just clear up some of what we're discussing.
Even if her body was deconstructed by magic, it wouldn't be death or she'd have "died" every time she teleports.
It is precisely for this reason that if teleportation is ever invented, I will limit myself to more conventional means of transportation.

Oh, no! They've all transformed into giant, Swedish, lederhosen-clad yodelers! Run!

It's the launch of the new IP, yes, but I also thought the plot involved the girls travelling to the universe the spin-off takes place in.

That's the major thing that bothered me. Even if it was boosted by the Elements, it was still a two-line spell that cost apparently no effort to cast and didn't even require Twilight to be wearing her Element (which every other effect, including petrification and purification, as well as the magic resistance the Elements grant, requires).
The weirdest part is that apparently you can make up new spells just by rhyming.
Just what are those ropes attached to?
The same thing that the guy swung on in The Blind Bandit from ATLA.
Not so.
Which game?

I still can't stop wondering about what exactly happened to the Element of Magic. Is it physically a part of Twilight now? Has it reverted to the state it was in before the pilot, invisible and waiting for a new "spark" to awaken it? Is this whole thing just a stupid plot hole? I guess we'll find out next time the Elements become relevant.
The same gem that's in the element of Magic seems to be part of her princess crown, so it's possible that the element just vanished and re-manifested later.
Something I haven't seen pointed out here yet: the mailpony in this episode is the same one who had glasses in "Putting Your Hoof Down".
They were not wearing them when she returned (aside from an animation error with Fluttershy that vanished when she turned around).
I'm pretty sure she was wearing the Big Crown Thingy during her coronation, wasn't she?
I have a message from another time...
She was crowed with a similar looking tiara, but it was definitely not the same one.
Wait, something happened to the Element of Magic? Couldn't see it of course, but I assumed it reappeared with her newly made body.
