Ok, I'll retract that statement a bit. Shipping is fine, as long as it isn't terribly angsty. I've mentioned before some pages back that I tend to enjoy more upbeat works. Thanks for the suggestions guys, by the way, very much appreciated.

if you don't mind a non-Doctor crossover, there's also my favorite Derpy fic and one of my favorite fics period, Elementals of Harmony. I mean, how awesome is a Badass and Child Duo with Derpy and Dinky? also some very nice fanon for who Dinky's father was.

Then yeah. Shipping and Handling is AMAZING. While the shipping is the main point of most chapters, it's the shipping Derpy is doing, not what's happening to her, and it is VERY upbeat and heartwarming.

Allow up to an additional eight weeks for shipping and handling. Prices may be higher west of the Rockies.

A pretty good case can be made that Golden Harvest (aka Carrot Top) and Written Script (grey unicorn, purple mane, scroll cutie mark) are Dinky's parents. In "The Mysterious Mare Do Well", WS and Dinky are in a crowd scene together. In "The Last Roundup", Dinky is right between GH and WS during Applejack's speech, and they both turn to smile at Dinky. Later, when AJ boards the train, GH and Dinky can be seen on the train, seated next to each other. Most recently, in both "Just for Sidekicks" and "Games Ponies Play", GH and WS can be seen nuzzling affectionately at the Crystal Empire train station.

Also on the subject of fics, I'm about to finish part 2 of The Book of Friendship! Just once my editor gets to it.

CONJECTURE NUMBER TWO Perhaps the three varieties of pony can breed, but produce only infertile offspring. Unicorn + Earthpony = infertile hybrid. Earthpony + Pegasus = Infertile hybrid. Unicorn + Pegasi = infertile hybrid.

Perhaps the cake twins are the result of a pegasus-unicorn mix; that way they could be twins with each twin taking after one of its parents. No idea how the Cakes adopted them (no way that Earthpony + Earthpony = Unicorn/Pegasus twins; and Mister Cake's explanation is extremely sketchy and just screams "shenanigans" to me).

CONJECTURE NUMBER THREE: The three pony breeds can interbreed; with the following results.

Male Pegasus + Female Earthpony = Pegasus.

Male Earthpony + Female Pegasus = Earthpony.

Male Pegasus + Female Unicorn = Unicorn.

Male Unicorn + Female Pegasus = Pegasus.

Male Unicorn + Female Earthpony = Earthpony.

Male Earthpony + Female Unicorn = Earthpony.

So, in Earthpony + Pegasus pairings; the offspring are the breed of the father. In Pegasus + Unicorn pairings; the offspring are the breed of the mother. In Unicorn + Earthpony pairings; the child is an Earthpony.

That gives Three ways an Earthpony can happen, Two ways a Pegasus can happen; and One way a unicorn can happen. Given that Unicorns seem to be the most powerful (given magic), followed by pegasi (given speed and flight), followed by Earth ponies (physical strength, endurance); those ratios seem likely to create some sort of balance of power.

This also allows for the theory that Flutttershy's mother was an Earth Pony. However, there is still no way for Earthpony + Earthpony to equal Pegasus/Unicorn twins.

If anyone else wants to make charts of dominance, they are welcome to try.

That's all very complex, but there's really no reason to believe that ponies of different types have any difficulty having kids. As has been pointed out, Mr. Cake gives an explanation for how there is pegusus and unicorn DNA in the family, and there's no reason to believe he's making it up or that the twins are adopted.

I thought there were three traits, and if you inherited more of one trait than the others you were born as that "race". If you happened to be born with all three traits in perfect balance then you were an alicorn.

Given that Carrot Top/Golden Harvest is Derpy's best friend / roommate, there's plenty of call for Derpy to act heartwarmingly motheringly towards the little filly. Heck, I like the idea of a handful of ponies acting with parental love, care, and affection towards Dinky. Much better than This scenario.

Is there any indication that the Crystal Empire is anything more than a Land of One City?

There's probably some sort of dominant/recessive gene thing that would kick in.

Clearly the crystalline nature of the Crystal Kingdom acts as a massive energy sink/trap to collect solar heat and natural magic, enriching the land about it and allowing it to be more habitable.

@JT: I'd think it's more a coinflip, but weighted in favor of the mother's race.

Umm, at this point. You are NEVER going to convince the fandom as a whole that Dinky isn't Derpy's daughter.

Conjecture number four: It actually works like Mr. Cake said, and the reason he looked so sketchy is because he was goddamn tired of being asked what happened by all the nurses.

My personal theory is that the magics will tend to intermingle in a halfling, but that a pony's general form/tribe is determined by their magic, so the most powerful one will get the appearance. So Fluttershy probably has some Earth Pony in her, but her ability to fly, weak or no, shows that her pegasi magic is more forward. Thus, pegasus.

Id have to think about it more... but I bet it works something like blood group inheritance. In some blood groups you have to inherit a certain gene for one protein so another protein can be built on it... if the first protein doesn't exist then you cant have the second even if you have a gene for it.

I just got attacked on Google+ by someone for saying that I thought Derpy was a bit inspiring because she was a visibly disabled character in an otherwise perfect society... and that I felt bad that Hasbro technically kicked her to the curb yet is still cashing in on merchandise.

I prefer the idea that Dinky is Derpy's daughter and that she was just with Carrot Top because CT is Derpy's friend/roommate and watches over Dinky sometimes. Really there's way too much fanon about Derpy and Dinky at this point for a few scenes of Dinky with someone else to change it.

@Lurker: It's the centerpiece of the Kingdom's superstructure and enables the who shebang to work as intended.
