Hey, question. Has anyone ever tried to write a better version of My Little Dashie? "Better" as in, the same basic premise, but without the troubling details that the main character's relationship with the pony evolves into extreme seclusion with her as his only company and vice versa, i.e. turning himself into the very caricature of bronies held up by the mainstream?

First off, that's kind of insulting to the author, regardless of one's opinion about the story's quality.

Second, I would argue that by doing that, you're basically redoing the whole story from scratch. The whole story was, in fact, about the human adopter, his life, his troubles, and the character development that began when he found an abandoned baby cartoon pony. Put anyone else in his place, and you've pretty much torn out the entire story by the root.

Or you could write your own fic :V

^ Actually, that's why I'm asking. In an attempt to break my writer's block, I just churned out five pages of such a fic more easily than anything else I've tried to write in the last year or so. I was just curious if retakes on MLD were already saturating the fanfic archives. :P

The simple fact of saying "Hey can anyone rewrite this better?" is an insult to the author.

I haven't read MLD, so I have no idea what the quality of it is, but it's an entirely valid approach for an author to take an existing premise and rewrite it in a different manner. Granted, if you're only doing so because you think the initial attempt was bad, it does come across as kind of dickish, but even so different people like different things and rewriting a story in a manner that appeals to one's own tastes can turn out a work of fine quality.

Heck, my own most popular story is basically every "x has a crush on y" plot, only applied in a specific way.

And for what it's worth, MLD is kind of infamous for the Unfortunate Implications of the protagonist basically isolating himself from the rest of the world; so a take on the story that attempts to avert those would be interesting.

Also, I like corn. Now peas, those are just evil.

@JT: What I object to in MLD is that the guy more or less moves to hide in the countryside so Dashie wouldn't be found out by other people, and he managed to avoid detection for years. That shouldn't be very probable in the modern world.

That's all well and good, but I still wouldn't eat them.
