They are not main characters so they are not allowed to be useful.

I always figured that if they did have a standing army it would probably look more like the UK military then the U.S. Then again they have more or less made clear that Equestria is North America so who knows.

Your standard Changeling grunt doesn't seem very immortal, and they could be taken out by an irate fashion designer.

I thought that was referring to Chrysalis. She was the one to take out Celestia. And the Mane Six didn't have to deal with the sneak attack meteor strike.

The other pony races generally have difficulty competing with a unicorn's magical talent, as seen when Trixie easily bests Applejack and Rainbow Dash in a show of skill. This causes Rarity to state that only another unicorn could put Trixie in her place, although Twilight Sparkle is the only unicorn present able to outdo Trixie.

That probably depends. If Trixie were actually competing with them rather then making them look bad, things probably would have gone differently. I should also point out that the only unicrons we've seen that are stronger then Trixie are Twilight and Sombra, so that muddies things even more.

Well Trixie is an extremely talented unicorn. Most unicorns are a lot weaker.

Shining Armour might be better, though a lot more specialised. He seems to only have the shield spell.

I guess so. But magic is a pretty powerful assist.

You know my Unicorn Doctor? If he turned 'nasty', a Vader style choke hold spell would just be the tip of the iceberg. I still think magic is very high tier.

Trixie has that sweetspot of learning many, many spells that the average unicorn doesn't get acess too. Only thing is Twi has more raw power than her.

Anyways, it's not like we've had Pinkie try her luck with Trixie properly.

@Bad Wolf: He also has that laser thing that Twilight does, but nothing else that we have seen.

@Applelight: Well, it is an asset. And so is weather manipulation, and control of agriculture. Your average unicorn is probably not going to be much better then the other tribes. In fact he's probably going to be the weakest.

@Ace: The only one who was actually doing any infiltration was the Queen. The others just poured in when the shield went down.

It would be interesting at least to see an Earth pony or pegusi capable of resisting or outstrengthing an unicorn spell, from what we've seen they are completely helpless to even the most mundane spell used on them (eg. RD often managed to just knock AJ off when holding her down, when grabbed by Twilight's spell, she just dangles there helpless).

@Mio: it would have been habit for Changelings to resort to deception to separate the guards into smaller numbers to make it even easier to overwhelm them. Note that all the scenes with guards show them being outnumbered in tiny groups. Divide and conquer!

@psi: Lower-powered unicorns would find their TK grip easily broken :V

It's hard to say, I guess if their physical power was great enough they could maybe overload or outpower a spell, or overstrain the user.

I get the funny image that if RD flew with enough strength, she may end up dragging Twilight with her lasso style.

@ Psi: Twilight can also carry giant star bears with her telekinesis. Most unicorns can't.

@Ace: I guess that is a reasonable assumption even if there isn't much to suggest it.

@Psi: All ponies are inherently magical so I guess they could try something, but I'm guessing that sort of thing is either considered unnecessary or dangerous (read discouraged by unicorns).
