Can anyone explain to me why there are a lot of complaints about the CGI Timberwolves? I don't get it. What was so bad about it?

It's probably just the fact that they were done in 3D Cgi that offended people. I thought they were ok personally.

@military structure: I'm of the fanon that SA is head of the Royal Guards overall, and there's 3 ponies right under him in charge of the unicorns, pegasi, and earth pony segments of the guard.

Honestly, I thought the Timberwolves looked really awesome in the new episode. And the CGI was a cool contrast to the flash animation that we're all use to.

They did stick out a little bit visually, but I don't even want to think about how hard it would be to do action scenes with such a complex creature design in 2d, so I don't mind them using the 3d models at all.

I'd imaging that Prince of the Crystal Empire and Captain of the Equestrian Royal Guard are mutually exclusive positions. Who knows who holds that position now, though. I once had a silly little idea for a story in which due to extenuating circumstances regarding open positions in the chain of command in the Guard, Spitfire, as Captain of the Wonderbolts, was technically next in line for the position. I'd bet she could do it.

I would imagine they would promote someone who has actually been a member of the guard to be it's new Captain. Somehow I don't think Wonderbolt experience and Royal Guard experience would exactly overlap.

The Wonderbolts seem to be members of the Guard to me. Just a subsection of it. And I never said anything about experience. I said technicalities and the chain of command. It's like the Secretary of State suddenly becoming President after the former President and Vice President simultaneously resign.

I think the Wonderbolts are more like an elite aerial section of the military rather than dedicated 100% to the protection of the Princesses like the Royal Guard.

I thought that guards were the military. At least, considering the fact that nothing outside of the guards were mobilized for the wedding...

And the guards don't just protect the Princesses. They seem to act as a general security and police force around Canterlot, such as at the Royal Archives.

I've never actually thought of the Wonderbolts as a military unit in the first place. They always struck me as purely entertainment. I mean, if the Wonderbolts are part of the Equestrian military, that would imply that the Shadowbolts would have been part of a different military (if they were real, obviously), in which case it's hard to imagine Rainbow Dash even considering joining them.

I'm pretty sure the Royal Guard is not the whole the military. The name kinda suggests they aren't, and the fact that the Wonderbolts weren't mobilised for Canterlot defence shows that they aren't the whole military. And Princess Celestia was in the library when they were guarding it. And since it's the Royal Archives I'd guess it belongs to her so it'd fall under protecting the princess' property.

I see hypothetical real Shadowbolts being an Equestrian Black Ops branch. Mostly spying.
