@David: Beyond the Impossible certainly does have a place, but not in every show. It worked fine for Gurren Lagann for two reasons 1. the show was build entirely around it; the cosmology literally runs on Rule Of Cool 2. it had a defined endpoint in mind. They knew how many episodes they had to produce and thus they could end the series when they can't push it any more.

Neither of those things are true of MLP; the entire show is built around character interactions. The cast was designed with the purpose of fostering interesting conflicts between them. It was always intended to be based first and foremost on characters. Not that occasional pockets of adventure aren't good, but the show just isn't designed for that. I have no doubt that they could if they wanted to, but the problem is the more emphasis gets put on the epicness, the harder it is to focus on the characters.

That's how I want the series to end too...but not for a good while.

I like the character-driven plots in this series.

If you want epic adventure that much, I suggest you look elsewhere.

I don't really see the point of endangering the whole universe. It's not really above the world unless they introduce aliens which feels really out of place.

I could see them introducing a threat that has implications for more than just Equestria (heck, they already have the Crystal empire), but past that I feel like it would be trying too hard. The show as a whole just feels too subtle to have the fate of the whole universe at stake.

Besides, I much prefer the cast getting up to shenanigans in their day to day life. Almost all of my favorite episodes are ones with very little epicness to them.

@Japanese Teeth: Which is probably why a grander-scale adventure story should be reserved for the Grand Finale, and should probably be three-part or a full-blown Big Damn Movie. Something like Crisis on Infinite Earths, which was so popular because it was huge-scale and it had great characterization to boot.

But I still think a worldwide threat is still within the bounds of a normal two-parter for a series premiere or finale.

Still say the very end should be the mane 6 splitting up, moving away, following heir own lives and dreams, Twi back to Canterlot, taking on official duties as Celestia personal aide, Dashie to join the wonderbolts, Rarity to another big city becoming a famous designer, and yet making clear that despite the fact they no long see each other all the time, they are still bound by friendship, still think about each other, meet up when they can.

It should be like the Recess movie.
Life is simple: it has no nontrivial normal subgroups.

At this point, I don't think any one of us is going to agree with each other on scale.

Personally, I would be fine with a planetary-scale threat for a movie production, but no more than that.

They've already had a worldwide threat with Nightmare Moon.

Now that I think about it, the villian's plot in the Recess movie was a lot like Nightmare Moon.

They have the episode I mentioned as the final ep. Then the GRAND Finale is the full length movie aferwards where the the Mane 6 have to reunite to take on a cosmic level threat

Seriously though, part of things is, I think, is the show is aiming for a more relatable feel and to teach morals to viewers. Full blown escapism is nice and everything but it's easier to relate to ponies dealing with their everyday lives.

Though, at some point, I would like to see more of the world.

Rainbow pretty much summed up my thoughts on it. I'm not opposed to occasional adventure, but it's hardly why I watch the show and I could really take it or leave it.

I wonder if they're ever going to do an episode about two of the mane six having a full-blown (non-magically-brainwashy) falling-out. Or a series of episodes forming a miniarc, like the one we had with the Gala in season 1.

Because opinions and preferences.

You're acting like it's a crime to ask, shoot my head why don't you. >_>

@Japanese Teeth I was referring to the trope itself not the trope working with MLP.

MLP isn't that type of show.

Your tone probably sound like you were implying that not liking the show is fundamentally wrong, which is an opinion that would also be wrong.

At least they're moving forward with the arcs of their individual goals. Twilight's going to learn more advanced magic, Dash is now a Wonderbolt cadet, Scootaloo is now Dash's sidekick.

Good thing it's not like the Marvel Universe, which is in a rather annoying case of Status Quo Is God.

How they'll move forward with everyone else is up in the air, though.

In all honesty, I find stuff like those character development subplots far more interesting than the cosmology stuff. tongue

@Kyler Because you can totally understand a tone by reading text.

And notice how I said I, in that comment.

I don't know why you seem to be taking offense at that. I'm just saying, you might have been interpreted a certain way, that might not have been what you actually intended at all.

If I said it was the most awesome show I ever see, the I meant from my point of view, I wanted to know a different point of view.

Here's a question; why can't this 'grand finale' end without the need of a galactic threat?
Yeah, Andromeda is heading for you. You got over 9000 years until it collides.
