Yeah, that type of ending would be quite bittersweet, but it would be entirely fitting. I honestly couldn't think of a more appropriate way to end it. The message that you can't always stay as close to people as you would like is painful, but it's one that would be good to have. Especially if it's tempered with the idea that you can still remain friends as well as make new ones.
If/when they do end this Generation, I would not be opposed to G5 being set in the same universe following a time skip. With the CMCs as the main characters, perhaps?
Really, Equestria isn't so big that it would be hard for them to all meet up regularly. Canterlot is within view of Ponyville, and is where Twilight and possibly Rarity would probably end up. Dash I'd assume would travel a fair bit with the Wonderbolts, so she could see her friends whenever she passes through the area. AJ and Fluttershy I don't really see leaving Ponyville, and I have no idea where Pinkie would go off to. So yeah, having them split up at the end would be a bit sad, but not too sad because we know they'll still see each other regularly. Kind of like the Azumanga Daioh ending.

Probably better to skip to enitrely new characters like
Legend Of Korra.
Life is simple: it has no nontrivial normal subgroups.
@Ace: Speaking of that scene, did anyone else think that Spitfire was a bit too harsh? I mean yeah, reprimand or demote her fine, but kicking her out? You had been encouraging her up to that point.
Crowfall: You don't endanger civilians and expect to stay in the military.
@Kyler's Survey I might post something in the thread like "Uh, I may be seeing things, but I think Pinkie's outside my house poking the ground and making frowny faces. What should I do?"
Oh joy, Rainbow Factory.
Yeah, Andromeda is heading for you. You got over 9000 years until it collides.
@David: Oh right, I forgot that you were annoying.
Yeah, Andromeda is heading for you. You got over 9000 years until it collides.
How does Cloudsdale Weather Factory make rainbows, anyway?
There's no need to sharpen my pencils anymore. My pencils are sharp enough.
Even the dull ones will leave a mark.
@Orion: Oh you're just down thumbing it so we don't suspect that you actually work there.
Wait, heads? When did you become a hydra, Orion?
Oh, the thread? Don't worry, it's just dead
