@D Roy: The reason they (and other background pony pairs) are placed together in the show is their colors complement each other and the environment. You see, background ponies (originally, anyways) are meant to blend in somewhat so you don't notice them much.

They're not a couple, that's just shippers jumping to conclusions. I wonder what would happen if one day they reveal that Lyra & Bon Bon are actually sisters, and that's why they're so close.

Another note that I'd like to make about the supporting cast in this episode is that they knew when to keep quiet and simply fill the scene, which was pretty much all the time.

He actually explains the origins in the "How the hell did this all start" links at the top of the page. Initially, he requested it as a spur-of-the-moment "LOL random" thing during an artist's livestream. Then another artist thought the concept was funny enough that he drew it without even being asked. And that inspired Bronymike to get ALL THE ARTISTS to draw it.

Even after his explanation, I'm still a bit unsure on how he arrived at that final point.

He insists it's not a fetish thing. If Trixie eating pinecones were his fetish, he'd commission people to draw it for him.

Of course, that doesn't preclude the possibility of the dizzitron being miscalibrated...

Doesn't really have to be calibrated to much of an extent. Basic interrupter gears are pretty straightforward, and they've been around since WWI fighter jets to fire through the propeller.
