Continuing my thoughts about Luna/Nightmare Moon, I wonder how the "eats other ponies unless they give her candy" part got added into the story. It at least wasn't mentioned in the pilot where Nightmare Moon actually appeared, so that makes it even more uncertain even when that part got added; it could have been added after Luna was turned good again.
Unless she gave ponies nightmares where they got eaten by her?
I suppose some of it is that we don't know how long she was Nightmare Moon before Celestia sent her to the Moon, or even if some of her more evil or extreme acts began when she was still known as Luna (and then the name change occurred after she started acting more evil).

I would imagine it works by letting it spin, then when the lever's pulled, something pops into place such that it stops the spinning, allowing it to release at the same point.
