That's...right, actually. If the show does it again, that would be wonderful.

@Sereg

The episode made a point of showing that the town was build on the only bit of livable land in the area, meaning that the buffalo would have needed to stop there to get food and water for their journey. Forcing them to run through the desert instead of by the river could easily be equally fatal.

Why did I read that story you linked Ace? Why did I do that to myself?

But it is equally true that the land was the buffaloes' property before the ponies showed up and assumed it was empty. Taking something legitimately owned by one party because another one needs it more can turn into a bit of an issue.

Of course, the ponies didn't know that it belonged to someone else, so there is that.

I dislike Over A Barrel for pretty much everything except proving that Earth Ponies can't just go "lol orchard grown" in a second.

The bit on the train was pretty good as well I guess.

Magic Duel is possibly my most anticipated episode of this series.

Except it wasn't really land they owned, they didn't live there, they didn't use it most of the time. It was just land they passed through every now and then.

What you're forgetting is that this is a First Contact scenario. Two completely different sets of beliefs, cultures, and laws are clashing, and it's wrong to call one superior to the other. The buffalo owned that land by their law, while they didn't by Equestrian law. A compromise was necessary.

They said it was the only flat land capable of growing trees. They didn't say anything about the buffulo using it as a stop off point. Even after the compromise, the buffulo didn't need to stop for water. Food would have been even less important. The Apploosians actually say they need the land to live, but the buffulo don't. They just say they need it becuause it's tradition.

Warning: vaguely addictive/ contains WUBS/ Intercourse with You lyrics

Apart from that Give Me All Your Love song, this is Chrysalis's other theme song.

But they had made no attempt to indicate ownership beforehoof. They couldn't expect it to stay unclaimed. And they weren't even using it except as a road! A road that could have easily goneanywhere else.

@Sereg I'm just extrapolating the reasoning from the details provided. This issue is a failing of the writing of the episode, not in the morality of the buffalo. You need to take your real life biases out of this.

As for the ownership thing, in their culture, the fact that the ground had been worn flat was probably marker enough. How would they know that a race they had never encountered before would come along and disregard it?

But if the Apploosians had done what the buffulo wanted, they would have died horribly

Not necessarily. They could have moved elsewhere.

They were able to grow a full apple orchard in under a year in the middle of a desert! What more do you want?

I'm going with the auto growth theory too. Over A Barrel, Hearth's Warming Eve and Family Appreciation Day seem to prove it.

One issue that seems to be overlooked is historical value... or whatever it's called. I have no idea. Anyway:

The buffalo have been using that specific trail as their stampeding ground for generations. You don't just one day decide to up and move, at least not without some serious resistance. The location is just too well intrenched in their cultural identity for that.

They were able to grow a full apple orchard in under a year in the middle of a desert! What more do you want?
Sprouting a sapling in mere seconds with only a fistful of dirt!
