Somehow, I suspect the pony statues in the Garden all sacrificed themselves to buy time to put Discord on the rocks, using themselves as focal points for a powerful trap effect that prevented the Chaos God from escaping.

That, or they were involved in a trolltastic trap for Discord involving a danmaku barrage of Cockatrice Eggs, a musical performance, and very clevver trollplotting by the Alicorn Sisters.

I picture them smiling sadly at Celestia and Luna, and striking cool poses as they turn to stone alongside the chaos god.

(By the way, the average Internet-corrupted human with more memes and High Octane Nightmare Fuel would be too spicy for Discord to swallow. Humans can really be terrible creatures when we want to be.)

Still. If Discord and Nightmare Moon both happened, it's not a huge leap to think that others have tried fighting her.

The fact that she has a statue dedicated to "Victory" indicates that it's fairly important to her.

So, any guesses? Maybe a previous villian was turned into a tree. Fridge Horror for episode two's scene with Pinkie laughing at the trees.

People probably forget because Luna's been so under the radar. I have a feeling once more Luna discussion picks up it'll come up more often.

I suggest sending people IN SPAAAAACE, Deep In The Ocean, and Deep Within The Earth as pretty neat tricks.

...Oh dear, I suspect Twilight actually did do something that she feared would anger her mentor, and when nothing happened for weeks, she worried herself into a frenzy that the punishment was going to be a genuinely fearsome thing - and she still hasn't gotten over that fear.

I know a "nice" asteroid somewhere where somepony would get real tired of being pelted by hailstones from passing comets and being baked by cosmic rays.

Ah, great, now I can imagine a Leonard-esque pony living in a safe refuge at Celestia's pleasure, so his amazing/dangerous inventions don't break Equestria. The other reason why we haven't been having much Luna lately? She's been spending time making interesting and explosive gadgets with this pony.

It's a most interesting clock in Lord Vetinari's waiting-room that has its mechanism tick and tock just ever-so-slightly off-sync, so you get completely frazzled by the broken rythmn.

^In Discworld, Lord Vetinari, Machiavellithe Patrician, has a clock in his waiting room that's designed not to tick right. It skips ticks, ticks too soon or too late, that sort of thing. It's intended to soften people up before he calls them in to speak with them, and it always works.

Okay, so everypony would die, but the problem would be well and truly dealt with.

You forgot to mention that it was subtle about it. Obviously, if people know it's the clock, the effect would be somewhat marred.

Well, Molestia methods exist too, but I just don't want to think about them.

Though Trollestia seems to like to mess with Twilight by making the sun tick like a clock.

More likely that was just in Twilight's head though, what with her talking to her reflection in a puddle and such.

Funny thing about that Aside Glance is IT DIDN'T WORK.

Suddenly I imagine Celestia letting a dissidant noble take over top dollar for at least a day, saying "Okay, you try your hand at this." She even loans some of her power for the duration, and they fail hard at ruling the country even for just a day.

It could be an interesting holiday, the Rule Equestria For A Day where somepony is "voted" into temporarily taking over Equestria for a day.
