[up][up][up] I can just imagine her just cartwheeling around cheering until Celestia walks in. Then she stops, avoids eye contact, shrugs and carries on.

Maybe we should talk about Equestrian government. I bet there's some sort of noble council where ponies like Blueblood can feel important without harming anypony.

Probably an adviser board. They meet to discuss the issues and present their findings to Celestia, who ignores them because the adviser board is comprised of idiots.

"The Board has found that the Equestrian army is dangerously under-prepared for any sort of attack."
"Uh-huh, yeah. Put it on my desk, I'll have it sorted out by tomorrow."
"But Princess-"
-On phone- "Yeah, I'll take a large cheese pizza and a large Diet Coke. No, I don't want anchovies..."
"The Board has decided that we no longer invite Princess Celestia to our meetings because everytime we do, she orders a pizza, and it's costing the government tons of bits in tips."
"Canterlot Castle. Thanks." -Puts phone down- "What were we talking about, again?"

Celestia creates "committees" to make the less-competent nobles feel useful by arguing with each other over various matters.

It's a more suitable thing than stuffing them in dungeons because you'd run out of dungeonspace, plues it makes them feel important, plus it keeps them from going out and upsetting the ordinary ponies.

Luna should be reinstating the Elite Night Guard again, because she clearly anticipates more conflict (like say, a rematch with Chrysalis).

My headcanon is that Equestria took over most of the continent via peaceful union or annexation. It's a slight bureaucratic nightmare, but the gist is that individual states keep whatever governing body they had before, but that body is subservient to the Equestrian monarch. They used to have a national parliament, but it dissolved itself a while back due to shenanigans, and every attempt to reinstate it has never gotten off the ground.

Last question before I go to the bed.

Do you suppose there has ever been any kind of civil war in Equestria?
No heroes, no villains, only people.

I also think that the actual Equestrian government is pretty complex internally due to having to integrate three radically different political systems. A lot of the day to day stuff is run by normal ponies, but the big stuff is handled by the Princesses.

[up]Yeah. It was all Nightmare Moon's fault.

[down]They vote for Nobility in Equestria? That sounds silly.

Well, after the incident in which Celestia knowingly let the Commitee of Nobles take over admin duties for a week, nopony would vote for them ever again.

@d Roy: there was the time some of the nobles in her Commitee took power, but after a week nopony wanted to serve them again.

@Mio: Well, Celestia let the populace choose some of the government officials. Nobles in general might get voted into office, although in modern times the Equestrian adminstration has ponies from all walks of life.

Twi would probably not be savvy enough for outright government appointment for quite a few years yet (also the whole dealing badly with stress thing), but Celestia feels comfortable letting her be a minor advisor via her Friendship letters.

And yeah, below the Sun and Moon courts, there should be 3 major administration bodies for the three races of ponies, but it's mostly a formality. Sun/Moon courts are very mixed-race, the Manehatten, Cloudsdale, and Canterlot civil administration have slight racial bias, but in general it works well enough.

[up]I would think the three civil administrations would have heavy bias (and in Cloudsdale it would be completely uni-tribal).

I do wonder if Equestria does have a genuine royal court or if it's just like the Holy Roman Empire with a stronger Emperor.

Cloudsdale probably still has a strong military junta, but they lost a lot of government power after a large number of Hurricane's officers died to Windigo frostbite. It still has a presence, although it has been heavily marginalized by the pegasus units in the Sun Court's Guard.

Modern Cloudsdale government is more in the court of civil admin, although there is still a significant military culture in place, most strongly felt in the flight schooling system and the Weather Factory.

My guess it's that it's technically a monarchy in the sense that Celestia has the final say what goes on, but she's content to let her subjects govern themselves democratically as long as they don't screw up too badly.

Also, let's not be too hasty to assume that modern Equestrian politics even remotely resembles the stuff in the Hearths Warming Eve play. That was thousands of years earlier; things are mostly likely radically different.

[up][up]I don't see heavy military presence in Cloudsdale. I really think the Pegasi's "warrior heritage" is all but gone.
