I'm thing the actual lesson will be something along the lines of: "You shouldn't always let someone's past influence how you see them now."

That said, it's a lesson that everypony in Ponyville will have to learn, not just the mane six.

@Ginger, Considering the storyboarding and production for stuff like this occurred in like January before the brony phenomenon became big, I doubt it. They probably know now though.

They're probably well aware of how popular she is, although I'm not sure if they're familiar with the most popular fanon interpretations of her character.

I'm sure they're aware of her popularity, much like how the show's staff is aware of Derpy's popularity, but there's no way they know "all" the Alternate Character Interpretation. Writers aren't allowed to read fanfics, they may have seen some fanart/comics but in all likelihood Lauren had some canon personality written down in series-bible about Luna and they're working off of that.

It protects them from legal issues. You don't want anyone saying you ripped off their fanfic. Although, the general paucity of actual new ideas means there will always be overlap. They're probably more concerned about specific details.

That would happen even if people weren't pissed.

An interesting interpretation on Sweetie in this fic; she's roudy in the shop because ever since Rarity got popular in the business she's hardly ever payed any attention to Sweetie, and apparantly she used to give her a lot o attention when she was younger; now she feels almost dejected by Rarity. Cuases a falling out between them in the fic; maybe that's where the 'sad' part of the fic comes in.

@Teeth: I think Jayson Thiessen does look at fan art. And one of the storyboard artists (Sibsy) has a deviantART page where she favourites pony fan art. They also enjoy the pony videos, but I'm guessing that's not a big deal at all.

@gingerninja: Like I said up above: Legal issues. I guess fan art is OK for writers since that doesn't actually influence their work. I'm not sure what the specific rules are for animators or artists.

They have a strict model to work off of, so there's less temptation for them to imitate fanart than there would be for a writer to borrow a fanfic story.

I don't think it's an actual rule that they can't read anything, just can't let it influence their work. That's not too hard, especially if said fics are way out there compared to what they are allowed to do.

I think the bronies will accept Luna' canon personality, and will love and tolerate the neighsayers as usual.
