I mostly agree with Badwolfwho, but not to the same extent.

Here's how I see it:

Luna gets jealous. CMFIS starts to kick in and she goes a little Flutterage/Tardy Sparkle and decides that she'll force the ponies to love her night by making the night last lnger. Problem, Celestia is the older and more powerful sibling. So...she goes and uses forbidden dark magic to buff herself up to stronger than Celestia, side effect...going even nuttier and deciding that an eternal night sounds even better! Celestia can't help Luna, so seals her in the moon for a thousand years, planning to have the next bearers try again. The next bearers strip Luna of the corrupting dark magic and show her the truth...that she is loved by her sister and still has a chance to be loved by her subjects.

@ Blue: I don't see the problem personally, if Luna is legitimately sorry after the Elements forced perspective or whatever it did in addition to taking away her dark magic, why wouldn't Celestia forgive her since her entire plan revolved around forgiving her at the end? And since everytime there is a huge threat facing Equestria the Elements are used (or tried to be used) then it is consistent usage.

I'm more or less with Serge. though I see it as possible some outside force helpped guide her down that path, i really don't see it as having taken her over, the trun to evil was all her, this force, if it exists, just helpped her along, basicly pulled a Darth Sideous on her.

@Sereg Actually, that sould rather good, bar the CMFIS (I'm still not convinsed that's a thing). Mind if I borrow it for my headcanon? ^_^

Oh, another debate about Luna? My personal take on it is that there was some corrupting influence at work, but it only turned her into Nightmare Moon because she allowed it to; there was already enough resentment on her own that she made a conscious decision to accept the power.

Most likely Luna made her choice out of anger and resentment, and it spiraled out of her control.

However, one thing I'm not convinced that Celestia and Luna were the only previous bearers. I think that they had help.

There are too many variables for me to make anything more than a random guess at what actually happened. What we do know is that she's most certainly not entirely over it. Luna Eclipsed showed that she still harbors a massive inferiority complex combined with equally massive amounts of guilt and a desire to fix things with her subjects.

I still can't stop laughing at this.

So, I finally decided to test out my hypothesis that Canterlot ponies mostly have even syllable names and non Canterlot Ponies mostly have odd syllable names. Turns out non Canterlot Ponies are pretty even in regards to that and barely any Canterlot ponies have been named so there's not a large enough sample size to test on.

Plus you'll want to know how one of the villains impersonated Shining Armor's favored lieutenant and convinced him that if he didn't act to destroy Celestia then Equestria would completely disregard his accomplishments and exclusively worship his sister, her friends, and the Princesses, causing him to gather an army and lay siege to Canterlot...
