Given that when she's actaully on the job she knows her shit and is a pretty damn good team leader, i'd say she actually is an offcial employee of the Weather Factory and wa sent to ponyville either to head up the squad or just as a member who quickly worked her way up.

She seems like the type to take on the leadership role, as seen in Hurricane Fluttershy.

I definitely think that RD is just as good if not a better leader than Twilight. Twilight's backup plans tend to either be non-existent or backfire horribly. Rainbow Dash, on the other hand, responds as needed on the fly and spurs other ponies into action. Notable examples being in Secret of My Excess, The Last Roundup, and her coaching (which she is also really good at) in Call of the Cutie and Hurricane Fluttershy.

Problem is, she also tends to be stupid. Like, kicking a dragon in the face stupid.

Twilight is a good manager, but an awful leader.

Pretty much what Blue said, Twi is better at long term planing, at organizing things, and getting thinks working at optimal efficiency, but she's not so good at on the fly changes and working without a plan. RD is better at adapting, at changing plans on the fly, or just winging it, as long as she doesn't let her impatience and over confidence take over.

So yeah, Twi would be a good team manager, while RD would be the team coach.

The obvious solution is for them to work in tandem. Twilight as the planner, and Rainbow Dash as the execution-manager-person-thing.

My favorite explanation on the genetics thing was this.

In a general population, this will produce very slightly more earth ponies than pegasi or unicorns, but not very much.

It certainly makes more sense than any other pony genetics WMG I've read.

The exact details of the genetics aren't exactly anything that really needs headcanon for me. I know the possibilities in terms of end results, and that's all I really need.

I just rationalize it as the ponies having so many mixed bloodlines from pre-classical times that nowadays the odds of matching your parent's race isn't very good at all.

Also character opposites

Except that from what evidence we have, mixed race families are rather uncommon. Twilight's known family is all unicorns. Pinkie Pie and AJ's known families are all Earth Ponies, and Rarity's family is at least mostly unicorns (her father was wearing a giant hat, so we couldn't tell). The Cakes seem to be an extremely rare case, rather than a common occurrence, especially since the races of the children confused the characters at first.

Background character families tend to match up in terms of race as well.

Yeah, there's that. Thing is, if the bloodlines were mixed three or more generations ago, it might still have an impact.

Also, odds to evens Cadence and Shiny will be having alicorn children.

Might still have an impact? Yes. Likely to have an impact? Not really.

True, true. The funny thing is that Narrativium tends to mess with the odds, so if it makes for an interesting story, yeah, your kid's gonna take after great-great-grandma.

Yeah, the problem with that theory is that while unicorn and pegasus enclaves would dilute relatively slowly given a preponderance of their respective dominant alleles at first, earth pony lines would be interrupted within the first generation of mixing.

It bugs me when people try to label Fluttershy's Stare and Pinkie's...weirdness as official in-universe magic.

My brainwank theory on Fluttershy's Stare is that it's an actual projection of her Element.

The Stare isn't magic anyways. Pinkie Sense might be a legitimate enhanced ability though.

Just got the thing for Series 3.

Alright, it'll take me, by my estimate, 16 days, assuming that I get through one a day.

I can get to 11 tomorrow, and that'll mean I'll be done before the end of October.
