The voices fit them well, but the conversations don't always.

Still, it'd be hilarious if we got a thing where it was just Celestia and Luna just spending every day arguing with each other. I think that's why we never see a response to things like the Hydra and the Ursa Minor.

Because the Princesses were too busy arguing about things.

I had an episode idea about Celestia and Luna constantly disagreeing about the best way to run the country. They both learn something by the end.

@Applelight: I think it's less "only E Ps can grow food period" and more "only E Ps can grow enough food to sustain a society". Like a unicorn could have like an herb garden or something, but probably wouldn't be able to grow enough food to live off of.

The reason we don't ever see them arguing is because it devolves into Moon Threats.

I have reason to believe that last time Celestia and Luna got into an argument, Nightmare moon happened.

Agree with J Teeth, any pony could grow some plants, but EP's are the only ones that can grow stuff fast and in large quantities. As well as being able to grow in conditions no other pony could.

That was more of a civil war...

@J Teeth: That does beg the question of how the other two tribes got along before the Earth Ponies. The Pegasi in particular seem pretty screwed without any trade for food, at least with the unicorns I can assume they had a crap ton of other Unicorn serfs to do the work.

It's more likely that either the Earth Ponies came first, or all three races developed in parallel. Before the Earth Ponies would be before ponies in general.

OK, those are good points, but what about the 'instant growth' theory? It's hard to say weither it stands or not. The zap apple trees and that truth plant grew instantly, but they are already magical. Then AJ (as smart cookie) grew that plant right on her hoof...I just don't know what to believe.

Only earth ponies have the ability to farm in such bulk quantities like, say, the scale of Sweet Apple Acres or the massive wheat fields outside Fillydelphia implied by the offical map, I reckon. Unicorns and Pegasi can grow plants, but not as expertly as Earth Ponies, also their cultural habitats don't leave much farmlands (Unicorns were said to live on mountainsides, Pegasi in the skies). Admittedly Unicorns could resort to cave mushrooms and mountainside crops, and Pegasi could eventually stumble upon the science of aeroponics, but neither seems to have come up in canon.

Right they probably did... And people wonder why the Unicorns chose to blackmail the EP's for food instead.

I'm sure each of the races could function independently if given enough land. It's just that working together allows them to be far more productive, to the point that the overall quality of life is massively increased, thanks to Pegasus weather control augmenting Earth Pony production with Unicorn utility filling any gaps.

It's not blackmail if using it kills you too.

I would really like to know what insane unicorn thought that manually controlling the sun and the moon to begin with was a good idea.

Yeah, the farming's a whole world more efficient if they work together.

The Cave Mushrooms thing I brought up is a thing from Dwarf Fortress, where the dorfs grow Tower Caps for food. I can imagine unicorns desperate enough for sustanence resorting to the caveshrooms by turning mined-out crystal veins into Cap farms.

@Steve: I always thought it was an implication of some apocalyptic disaster that broke the world, and the ponies figured out how to unbreak it manually.
