Okay, an odd thought.

I've seen a lot of people assume that, because Fluttershy spends a lot of time on the ground and has such talent with animals, she must have some earth pony ancestry. Now, I'm not a fan of the view that a pony's entire personality is determined by their genetics... But if we were to entertain that view, why not go for a less obvious application of it? Namely:

Rainbow Dash is only half pegasus. Rightly or wrongly, she thinks the other pegasi judge her for her earth pony and/or unicorn genes. Her competitive nature and her bragging are overcompensation: she's trying to prove—to all the doubters, and to herself in particular—that her ancestry doesn't make her any less of a pegasus.

I don't particularly like that train of thought—and I honestly hope it isn't canon—but I found it interesting all the same.

@Meta: Given over several thousand years of the three tribes united, I reckon all the Mane Six have mixed blood in some capacity. The only one I can seriously imagine having anywhere over 75% pureblood would be Pinkie and AJ due to their traditionalist families.

It's odd how the Mane Cast manage to be both work as part of the Four Temperament Ensemble, Red Oni, Blue Oni scale, and then also be part of the Freudian Trio

Pinkie Pie is the Red Oni Id

Rainbow Dash is The Ego Red Oni

Applejack is The Superego Red Oni

Then you have Rarity who fits The Id Blue Oni

Fluttershy of all ponies end up being The Ego

And Twilight Sparkle is clearly The Superego Blue Oni

Usually it's the episodes that have the polar opposites where this is most noticeable such as S 1 E 8 which pit Rarity against Applejack, or S 1 E 15 where Twilight exits skepticism of the Pinkie Sense

I don't think I've ever heard of another show or book do this
