I was talking about sudden infatuation between two characters that already know each other really well, like any two of the main cast. With characters that have never met, it can make sense, but when the majority of fics just say "they were hiding their feelings, " it doesn't make any sense unless the pony involved is a master at hiding their emotions.
Okay, I know you guys are probably sick of me pimping
this story
by now, but it's so relevant to the situation that it's kinda hilarious. My entire goal in writing it was avert that kind of thing and basically try to play a romance as closely as possible to what it would probably look like in canon. In particular I'm
really trying to avoid that whole "they were always in love/they were just hiding their feelings/they suddenly develop a romance out of nowhere" thing, and try to show the relationship actually
developing rather than have it pop up fully formed. I realize it's
technically OOC that there's romance at all, but I'm basically just trying to explore what romance
would look like among the cast if it ever showed up.
Case in point, Twilight doesn't even recognize that she's developing a crush until someone else points it out, and needless to say it takes her a while to figure out how she wants to respond to those feelings.
