Wait, what is touhou?

I think the Sugarcube corner conspiracy thing is from Touhouh, but I'm not a fan so I don't know for sure.

I posted this the other day, but this one is cool, too.

I'm not sure why it's Photo Finish and Blueblood, though.

[up] I'm looking for Hunter S. Thompson MLP crossover stuff.

Hunter Thompson was a journalist right? How would you find crossovers of ponies and random reallife people?

@ATC - That would be great.

However, I personally would like it if he was actually a nice being and teaches Spike how to truly understand his dragon side.

He was a gonzo journalist and also an author.

It's kinda confusing and meta.

It's like a mixture of fiction and reality.

Did you ever read Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas or see The Movie?

D Roy: That would be even better!

This would also be great for a dragon mentor/antagonist.

Yeah, saying Hunter S. Thompson was a journalist is like saying that dada is an artistic movement. It's technically true, but vastly under-represents the gulf between what they were in theory supposed to be doing and what was actually being done.

That's a good way of putting it, Count.

Explaining Hunter S. Thompson is like trying to explain what TV Tropes is.

I want one of these to show up at least once in the show.

This would be good for a dragon of Spike's species.

This one would probably be tamed by Fluttershy.

I believe that Dragon Quest was a massive waste of great plot. We could have had Spike meeting up a wise, old, and benevolent dragon who help him understand his identity. We could have had a deeper exploration of this series' mythology.

Yet the writer(s) chose to have him interact with stereotypically crude and insensitive teenaged dragons.

One of my biggest problems with the season 2 is that there are just so many great ideas going to waste for unknown reasons. I think It's About Time was absolutely the worst in that regards.

Your opinion may differ, obviously.

D Roy, they may use the concept again, and this time have Spike meet an older dragon who can really tell him what it means to be a dragon.

@Con: Touhou is a series of Japanese Bullet Hell games that became memetically popular due to the character designs being unique and a really good jumping-off point for fanon. And also awesome music. It draws a lot of comparisons to the MLP fandom and for good reason. Some of the similarities between Touhou and MLP and their fandoms.

  • Primarily female cast, leading to lesbian shipping being extremely popular; there's a lot of homoerotic subtext in both works.
  • Magical setting with a unique cosmology (again, a lot of inspiration for fanfic and fanon)
  • Generates enormous amounts of fan-created material, including art, animations, games, and music remixes.
  • Enormous amounts of generally accepted fanon, often based off of very small events (e.g. one Touhou character is usually depicted as being overweight because her hitbox was slightly larger than the other characters)
  • Creators are receptive of fandom injokes and sometimes incorporate them into the work proper
  • Certain fan creations end up generating their own canons that end up being almost totally removed from the source material (e.g. compare the yukkuris from the Touhou fandom to the fluffy ponies).

@Ed: Only in sufficiently large fandoms.

@D Roy: I agree almost completely on Dragon Quest being a waste. I was disappointed we didn't learn more about dragons. It's About Time a lot less so; I thought it was fairly obvious that they weren't going to do a serious time travel plot and kinda assumed it was going to be a Stable Time Loop. The setting isn't really equipped to have a genuine Bad Future. Sure it had it's problems (so much filler), but it was still pretty funny.

So basically ponies and Touhou are Not so Different?

Speaking of which, yet another thing I'd like to see would be a villain giving one of those speeches. Maybe Trixie to Twilight?

[up][up]Pretty much. Ponies have been called the western answer to the Touhou fandom, and honestly, I think it's a pretty apt comparison. The only real difference is the source media (computer game vs. show) and the fact that the brony movement also takes a lot of cues from Trekkies when it comes to doing cons and stuff.

[up]No idea. I don't keep up with them much since they basically split off from canon.

[up][up][up]You might actually get that if the "Trixie as a third season villain" thing pans out.
