Most saddles aren't even for actually carrying folks anyways. Although AJ seems to have a worryingly good knowledge on how to fashion a rein-with-bit and grab onto a flying pegasus.

Way I see it, there are at least five kinds of saddles in Equestria:

Fashion Saddles, no padding and only meant for looks.
Utility saddles, mainly used to secure saddlebags for better handling of heavy loads
Riding Saddles, mostly for athlete and rescuer pegasi with more safety straps
Armored Saddles, for fighters and the Royal Guards
Specialty saddles, for recreational activities not meant for young foals

Maybe bridles were an oddly popular fashion item back in ye olden days. Now it mostly goes under category 5.

@Story: Well, the saddle Twi was wearing in Winter Wrap Up seemed to be for warmth, although she didn't have it later.
