As for wings, that seems like a natural detail that'd be worked into a halfway-point naturalistic style. I mean, most birds have wingspans that seem freaking huge compared to their bodies because...well, that's what it takes to get enough lift.

Another recommendation for anime would also be Cowboy Bebop, 26 episodes and a Movie which takes place between episode 22 and 23, it;s also Anime First, so you don't have to worry about the mangas.
