Oh that explains it.
Life is simple: it has no nontrivial normal subgroups.
On government: - It's actually a constitutional monarchy. The infamous Equestrian Parliament,
after some shenanigans, dissolved itself a couple of centuries ago. Every attempt to reinstate it has ended in failure. Nowadays, Celestia would just prefer
not to talk about it.
- Equestria does not have a standing army. Most who train and serve in the military are assigned as law enforcement or city guard, or tasked with defending cities or towns against hostile mythical creatures, or capturing said creatures.
"I've come to the conclusion that this is a very stupid idea."
@rat: I reckon it's a case of Nobility-driven ogliarchy that eventually angered the public enough to put Celestia back in charge since she did such a good job previously.
Equestria has a parliment but they don't do anything important. It's a place to shove ponies like Blueblood where they can't do any damage.

Also, I don't think Fluttershy was hugely OOC in that episode. She has a soft spot for animals, and as far as she knew, Philomena was a perfectly mundane bird.
And "Swarm of the Century" already established that Fluttershy sometimes falls victim to the
Cuteness Proximity.
You wanna kick mathenatics? You're subtraction, I'm addition.

That's a funny way to spell The Mare In The Moon.

Sounds like the Ottomans. Or at least, what I've heard of the Ottomans.
Look at me still talking, when there's SCIENCE to do!
@d Roy: You should see the official map, apparently the country is modeled after the North American continent.
It's not really geographically similar to North America. Just the locations of a few cities are similar. The largest difference appears to be that the mountain ranges run east to west rather than north to south.
Do you think that long ago, ponies were in charge of volcanism and geography too?

@JT: I think I'll join you in that. Still a little iffy on my concept, though...
