I like the idea that the Marks are open to intepretion, so a pony can come up with a new meaning for their Marks no matter what the original Talent the Mark symbolizes was. It would be nice for a Mark to represent a talent and various additional meanings and qualities of a pony.

yeah CM's are toatly up for interpretation. They are more metaphors for the pony then a THOU SHALT

@Ace: Same here. Any given cutie mark's meaning is basically tied to how the pony chooses to interpret it. I see no reason why it isn't possible to have two ponies with the same CM, who interpret it differently and have different skills. Like a pony who has the same CM as Cheerilee being a gardener or a florist.

[up]wild mass guessThe real reason Thunderlane wasn't there was because he injured himself trying to imitate Blossomforth's flexibility.wild mass guess

@Sereg Still, "cutie marks = language" sounds like it would be a pretty big part of learning about them, so I'm inclined to take everything Cheerilee said at face value without assuming that another underlying system is at work.

I do take Cheerilee's words at face value. But what she says and what we've seen imply other things to me. Besides, a language where every concept is a different symbol is too overly complicated to be useful in a normal situation.

Plus the fact that Twilight's cutie mark is the symbol for magic lends credence to my hypothesis.

..Or there just isn't a one-to-one correlation between the symbols and the concepts. If they're up to intepretation at all, it make sense that Twilight would get the "official" magic symbol; she's very book and nitpicky about doing things the "right" way. So it's only natural that if she's going to get a magic-related CM, she'd get the "official" magic symbol.

@Sereg You don't know that for a fact. I always thought that the Elements took a form to match their bearer, not that the bearers were somehow pre-destined to wield them by their marks.

I started reading a story on Fim Fiction that was about Cherilee's cutie mark. It was basically along the lines that she was lying about her cutie mark to get a job because she couldn't find one as a gardener.

[up][up]Also, this. If the cutie marks represented the elements, it would be kinda random. I mean, apples aren't exactly correlated to honesty, a lightning bolt is a rather arbitrary symbol of loyalty, etc.

Yeah I assumed the elements took the shape of the bearers CM's not the other way around, not like the giant stones had each one's CM on it to begin with.

If I remember, when they first recovered the elements, the symbols on them weren't apples and lightning bolts and balloons, it was circles and polygons.

Ok, so a CM appears when a pony learns their true calling in life. It is based on how they are, what they like, what they are good at etc... those things determine the CM, not the other way around. Even the most obscure CM's, the pony it belongs to understands what it means. I'm thinking that the CM is based on what the pony most associates their talent with at the time it is formed.

Before the elements activated, Twi's was the only one with the symbol being the same as her cutie mark. All the others had different symbols (meaning that we know how to right all the elements in "pony").

Before the Elements were activated I'm fairly certain Twilight's wasn't there. Since they only had five?

Or it's just a coincidence that she had a star CM and the Magic element stone had a star. and the actual shape on it has nothing to do with the element itself.

[up]No it appeared very briefly in stone form at first before changing into the big crown thingie.

ORRRR, since it only appeared after it had found a bearer the symbol on it was already taken from Twi's CM,

Okay but that's not Twilight's Cutie Mark. Her's has two central stars and five surrounding it. The stone is one star.

I could see that that particular star symbol having something to do with magic, seeing as it appears on Shining Armor's mark as well as on the broach he wore at the wedding, which belonged to his uncle. But Twilight's mark consists of more than just that star symbol, so I still don't buy that mark = symbol. IMO, Twilight personally associated that symbol with her talent, so it appeared as part of her mark.

It's a simplification. You see it in writing all the time. If they were carved into the stone, they'd be made as simple as possible.

It's not just stone that it's carved in, but the most powerful weapons in existence to be displayed prominently in the castle of the Immortal God Monarchs. It's not the kinda thing you half finish and say "Eh, it'll be good enough"
