I'd hardly call the detective stuff Ship Tease (if anything, the fact that Twilight wiped the pipe off is evidence against that), but it's shipping. It knows no logic.

I know for a fact the fanfic The Final Quest of Star Swirl the Bearded implies competition between the Changelings and the Windigoes, but no outright war.

@Ed: Not so much a request as a search request into L-space. Unfortunately I set my search criteria too strictly by default so it's hard to search for a desired result.

Besides it's a natural thing. Changelings need love in a literal sense to survive, and Windigoes prevent them from feeding.

But don't Windigoes gain power from hatred that already exists? I suppose a blizzard would cause bad feelings to get worse. The worse the storm gets, the worse everyone else feels, and so on and so forth. Genius really.

@Sereg I was referring to the fact that Cheerilee gave a long, metaphorical explanation of what her mark meant and represented. She didn't say "my mark means <insert word that Cheerilee's mark is the symbol for here>, " like she would have if marks had literal meaning. That's a pretty important detail to completely skip when teaching children about cutie marks and how they work.

Words don't have one to one equivalence even in real languages. It's not a cutie mark per English word. It's a cutie mark per concept which can be as broad, narrow, abstract, simple and arbitrarilly bound as necessary.

Okay, so I thought about how changelings feed on love. You know how canines can smell fear and other emotions? I think the changelings feed on what ponies excrete that causes dogs to smell it, likely horomones.

@Sereg: Cutie Mark mechanics might work on more than one level. Perhaps some of the marks are "ancestral", meaning that their base shape have been in pony bloodlines for a long time? (Stars, Hearts, Flowers seem to be very common motifs, for one thing.)

@Gex: Changelings seem to feed on more than pheromones, it seems to be implied they feed on love itself.

@JT: Food motifs, too. There also seem to be a series of technologically-oriented marks, like Hammers, Wrenches, tools, and that robot cutie mark we saw previously.

@Sereg Still, "cutie marks = language" sounds like it would be a pretty big part of learning about them, so I'm inclined to take everything Cheerilee said at face value without assuming that another underlying system is at work.
