AFID: It's hard for me to feel a huge amount of sympathy for Cranky, considering how well things turned out for him in the end. Sure he had to put up with a few hours of major irritation, but then he found the love of his life whom he'd given up on ever being reunited with. Same reason I bought the way he decided he was okay with Pinkie. Remember, he'd known her less than a day. What do you think made more of an impression on him: her being really annoying, or her changing her whole life for the better?

Of course, seeing as how he was planning to live in Ponyville and Matilda lives there herself, they'd have likely ran into each other eventually anyway.

@Blue: I think a big part of it was the fact that I could really related to him; people going through my stuff is a pretty big Berserk Button for me, and stuff like her rifling through his stuff after he told her not too really bugged me. It would be like I was moving into a new apartment or something, and one of my neighbors started opening my boxes and messing around with stuff. You just don't do that.

Honestly, yeah, especially if I'd probably have run into her anyway. I mean, yeah, things turned out alright for him in the end, but that was more luck than anything else. Doing something nice for him doesn't really negate the blatant disregard for his privacy.

Actually, come to think of it, wouldn't the episode have been better served if Pinkie had been sad for a while, but then remembered what she saw in Cranky's diary, put 2 and 2 and 2 together, and went to talk to Matilda?

Then at the end, Pinkie could have just stayed out of the way and Matilda would have mentioned Pinkie's role anyway. The moral would still have worked, and the Cranky/Matilda relationship could have been more fleshed out.

I think needing Matilda to be a last minute surprise resulted in a less nuanced episode. But then again, Mio is right about logic being sacrificed for the sake of entertainment.

I'm not saying that Pinkie uniting Cranky with Matilda makes up for how she acted the rest of the day. I'm not saying that Cranky should forgive her for the way she treated him. I'm just saying it's realistic that, in the heat of the moment, with his emotions going haywire from finally finding his girl again, I definitely can see him forgiving her. Now, later, when he runs into her again and he's no longer flying high, he'll probably recall that he actually doesn't like her at all. Fortunately since he already told her they were friends now she's not likely to bug him so bad anymore.

Incidentally I just wrote this worldbuilding information thingy about the headcanon I use for Surprise. This is a condensed version that's free of any (major) fanfic spoilers.
