I agree that AJ's decision to abandon Ponyville for a while was a massive overreaction, but it doesn't justify their decision to basically try to force it out of her. Not to mention that she never really said how long she intended on staying away

They didn't actually try to force her, like kidnap her and bring her back or anything like that. They tried to force her to tell them what was wrong so they could evaluate whether or not it was a valid reason for staying behind. Which is something they deserved to know, or at the very least her family deserved to know. And she specifically said that she was never coming back to Ponyville.

[up] Welcome back Applelight. You are our lost Applejack. grin

Hey Applelight, good to see you again.

@Blue: Are you sure? Because I don't remember her ever making a statement about how long she would be gone. In any case, I still think they should have tried to convince her to come back through other means. I'm not saying that they were wrong for wanting to get a reason out of her, I just think they went about it the wrong way.

Welcome back, Applelight. =) Of course, you might want to leave again if I tell you that I was this close to setting Pinkie on you, TLR-style... ;)

more at everyone else who were deliberately trying to annoy AJ into talking. Seriously ponies, respect her privacy.

Well she did have a serious problem. What were they supposed to do, abandon her?
Life is simple: it has no nontrivial normal subgroups.

No, they should have started by explaining why she should come back "your family misses you, the farm needs you to run properly, ponies around town need you", etc. As is, it comes across as "can you tell us why you're leaving" "no" "fine, then we'll do this the hard way". They never really try to convince her to come back; they focus all their efforts on trying to find out her reasoning. It's sort of the same problem that they had in MMDW; they just jump right to an extreme solution rather.

@Applelight: I'd say that the discussion here has actually been quite good lately. If you want to come back, go ahead.

That said, I'm not getting into this one, mostly because I'm terrible at making arguments.

I dunno, Applelight would probably enjoy it if you were to sic Pinkie on him.

Thanks. smile

@ AFID

I do have to admit that I can't condone Pinkie's actions towards Cranky...but I can't hate her for it, because her heart is honestly in the right place. Smile smile smile explains it all. Pinkie lives only to make others happy...she just gets it wrong sometimes.

@ TLRU

It's tough, but I agree with the casts actions towards AJ. Though yeah, it's another MMDW style issue. The others should have tried a gentle approach first.

And please sic Pinkie on me. waii

I liked how it ended. Cranky reuniting with Matilda, and Pinkie being sincerely kind.

I liked the beginning and the end, but the middle was overly cruel to poor Cranky.

@storyeller: They could have tried to appeal to ask what happened in the tournament or appeal to her sense of family, or something else that might have actually worked instead of trying to coerce her via torture.

I should clarify that I think ultimately they did the right thing, I just feel like they should have made more of an effort to explain why they wanted her to come back so badly before trying to force it.

[up][up]Exactly. It just felt weird that they spent so much time trying to get inside her head when saying "Your family misses you, and everybody in the town wants you to come back" probably would have solved the problem. It's like the show actually dodged the problem: the whole reason they want AJ back is because the town is better off with her around, and that's exactly the opposite of what AJ is doing. If they would have explained that that's why they wanted her to come home, it would have ended differently.

I'm 95% certain. I watched the episode about a week ago, and I recall it being said both times. But I don't remember exactly where it was said, so I could be wrong. I'm not gonna go looking for it to prove myself right, so I suppose I can't blame you if you don't believe me.

Man, I shouldn't try and keep up with the thread when I'm writing, the conversation keeps skipping over me.
