@Story: What I mean is that he figured out new ways to apply his Geass rather than randomly going "Oh, by the way, it can now go through walls" or whatever. Compared to say, Ichigo, he certainly doesn't pull new powers out of his ass. Although his plans certainly go into Xanatos Roulette, though.

Well like, for example, he has a flare spell. He shoots a jet of burning sparks up into the air that can linger around, completely illuminating the area. However, if he aims his horn at the enemy, it becomes a handy ranged attack. He can can't make it more powerful or anything like that. It all demands on the aim.

See, this is why I'm on the fence about One Piece. On one hand, it uses the whole "weird powers" thing better than just about everything except Jojos Bizarre Adventure. On the other hand, I think it has one of the ugliest art styles of any manga I've ever read.

Talk about New Powers as the Plot Demands with this kid...

Dwarves in Artemis Fowl are worse. They get a new power every book.

I'm not big fan of Badass Normal they are to often trieted as better that superpowered character because of their lack of powers (that often hapen with Batman). Or to have abilities who normals shouldn't have.
Because he know I'm going to go out in this plane and I'm going to remove one of His creations from His universe.

@ Mousa

Yeah I don't get that one on one thing Shonen does. If you team up, you become much better!

My engineer could hitch a ride on the back of one of the Pegasi as he shoots at targets.

Oh I thought you were talking about the battles. The geass stuff is pretty clever.

@story The progression of dwarves is pretty ridiculous.

"Oh, you can dig really fast? Ok. And sonar beard thing? That makes sense. Wait, luminescent, tough saliva?"

I'm particularly drawn to BadassNormals myself, so my main characters tend to be ordinary humans. One exception to this is a guy named Dornen who eventually acquires a source of immense magical power called the Seed of Evil by killing the sorcerer who previously possessed it. Dornen loses his left arm in the process, and the magic usually manifests as sort of replacement limb when he uses it, because that's about as much as he can wrap his mind around, but he resists using it as much as possible mainly to spite the voices of its previous masters whispering to him from inside his head.

One Piece is pretty damned detailed. It just takes a while to get used to the oddness of the art style.

I'd only have one character who 'changes'...the Engineer...because he refines and improves the design.

Stats at MK 2...goes onto MK 3 etc.

Sorry to derail, but I've been reading about Keanu Reeves, and I'm convinced he's immortal. If not, he's still a really nice guy.

You forgot lockpicking, gas propulsion, suction cup pores, and being immune to the bends.

@story The gas propulsion kinda makes sense, but the suction cups and lockpick were pretty bad. And the "no bends" was horrible.

Since we're talking about powers and Badass normal's, here's this journal.

Anyway, I think Opal Deception is where it got really egregious. Also, Light is better at exploting his power in inventive ways than Lelouch was.

Journalism is just a gun. It's only got one bullet in it, but if you aim right, that's all you need.

I tend to give my non-human characters incredible powers with incredible drawbacks.

Ecksample; A certain characters can turn into a being of flame and a crocodile; but water has the effect on her that mercury has on humans; and her blood doesn't clot so a nosebleed paper cut or shower could kill her.

This is great. I'm trying to write a Shonen comic, and I want to know the pitfalls.

you know we have a page for that sorta stuff, right?

I never worry about weaknesses, if your character can die from a bullet wound, he's vulnerable enough.

[up]The pitfalls section fails to mention my very irritation and even endorses it by advocating the flipping Touernament Arc! AAAAAAAARRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!
