Honestly the Derpy drama wasn't so bad around here. The worst we got was a massive "Oh, this is going to be a giant shitstorm", but almost no one who actually posts here was really angry about it. The only part of the whole thing that really bugged me was that they underped her eyes in the edit, and that was less about political correctness and more about the fact that Derpy as a character only exists because of the crossed eyes, so changing that basically removed the one aspect of the character that made her popular.

But yeah, I actually agree with most of that. The show did something cool for the fans, and it's terrible that some people used the oppurtunity to complain.

Yeah, I only got into the fandom about a month ago, so I completely missed Derpygate.

@ JT: I'd disagree about the complainers being the Vocal Minority, In my experience I never came across anything of that viewpoint it always had to pointed out. On the other hand the Save Derpy camp was ridiculously vocal to the point you couldn't swing a dead cat without hitting a Save Derpy petition, picture, video or wall of text.

I know a lot of people were angry, but the extremists always scream the loudest. I think most bronies are alright, and you shouldn't let something like that taint your love of Derpy. What did she ever do to you?

@Badwolf: True, my point is just that the majority of the fans weren't necessarily the ones who were making a big fuss about it, on either side of the issue.

Well, yes it was Vocal Minority stuff. My anger mostly came from the fact that those fans complained and forced Hasbro to change something that they did as a gift. It's like they didn't watch Suited for Success.

Echo: That was a knowledge failure on Hasbro's part. Derpy in general is fairly non-politically correct (unsurprising given her origins started with a group on 4chan). I always predicted that if they made any sort of reference to fanon things would blow up. Honestly, it was a total publicity mess from the very start.

I think a big problem of the fandom is that we are overhyped. There's this big pedestal type of thing going on. We're held up as some kind of big open community that will always love and tolerate. Thing is, by nature of being a generalization, it's not true. Yes, our public face is noticeably more open than many other groups out there, but here's the caveat: we're still human. We have opinions, get angry, have disagreements, etc. I don't know where the expectation came from that this fandom is perfect, but that's an impossibility and it sets up newcomers for disappointment. On the flipside, just because there are counterexamples to this hype doesn't mean the opposite generalization is true. We're not all like the counterexamples.

@Crowlover, she isn't my favorite. Rarity is my favorite overall. DT gets third fav overall.

Whenever people call her mean for the way she acts, I see it different. I don't see her being mean just to be mean. I see it like a shield she uses to protect herself. She seems like she would be to scared to let herself open to the other ponies for fear of how they would react.

All that is basically head canon though.

I preferred the edit personally. At least whoever voiced her that time knew the gender of the pony they were voicing.

@Echo: I can see that. We really don't have enough background to say why she acts like she does, and it wouldn't be the first time a fan has given backstory to an antagonist.

@Broccoli: Actually, Rarity fans are pretty common in this thread, at least compared to elsewhere. Wonder if story could dig up those "best pony" polls we did a while back. I recall Rarity doing pretty well in both (although Twilight ended up winning by a pretty big margin).

Also, I think a lot of people's issues with DT are that she's by far the most realistic antagonist in terms of "you've probably met someone like this". With just about everyone else, it's less likely you've run into someone like that; not everyone has interacted with someone like Trixie or the Flim Flams. And people generally don't have any reservations about liking Chrysalis or Discord because they've never interacted with a Big Bad style villain. With DT, just about everybody can look at her and recall somebody they actually know who was like that.

@JT: I agree. That's prolly why it's been easy for DT to be the antagonist in more than one episode, which is a rare feat in this show.

She's doing great, as long you keep moving, you doing fine in QWOP.

That's made her flat and boring, at least last episode with her made something different with her.

@Kuroi: I agree with that. Once I started noticing signs of disharmony within the fandom (Nothing to do with Derpy), I was depressed for a while because I actually somewhat bought into the idea that we were a 'perfect' fandom. Then I got my head out of my ass and remembered that we were still just human, and humans tend to cock things up somewhat. Readjusting my expectations helped me enjoy the good bits of the fanbase and ignore the bad parts more.

Same here. If you recognize that yeah, there are always going to be a few unsavory bits of the fandom, it becomes a lot easier to enjoy the good parts.
