@Moe: More remarking on the ridiculousness of holding Ranma as a universal standard. Though to be honest I don't particularly care for it. Saw one episode and it failed to capture my attention.

Well, in Japan Ranma was released as two series, Ranma 1/2 which is only 18 episodes, and Ranma 1/2 Nettohen which is the rest of it (for some reason the American box sets split it into seven seasons, probbaly just to make it more wieldy). There's also twelve OV As and two theatrical movies.

However, Ranma is non-serial, unlike most anime. So its an anime you can pick up and put down whenever you feel like it.

EDIT: As for why I rate it so highly, I gave a short list of reasons here

[up][up] Cool. Thanks for the recommendation. After all, I am always looking for more anime to watch.

[up][lol]

In all seriousness, I judge an anime based on the merits of its story. Even if the animation and visuals are lacking, if the story is good, I can look past that.

@L Dragon: My absolute favorite anime is Code Geass if you're interested. But do keep in mind it has a lot of haters.

Avatar the Last Airbender is also excellent, though not technically an anime.

[up] It is anime-esque, like this show.

Also, I loved the first season of Code Geass. However, I prefer to pretend that R2 never happened.

Wow, this thread has really gone off topic hasn't it? Sorry bout that.

[up]This thread goes off-topic all the time, so don't be sorry.

Also I really don't understand the hate that R2 gets. Can you explain that?

I've never seen Code Geass.

Been listening to songs from an old favorite, Yoroiden Samurai Troopers (known in the USA as Ronin Warriors) lately. The show itself might not be to everybrony's tastes, but it has a nice soundtrack (which, except for the theme songs, was mostly kept in the dub, surprisingly)

Universal Century Gundam for me.

Due to Executive Meddling the first 8 or 9 episodes essentially retreads the first season, which is kind of lame. And a lot of people hated the ending (by which I mean the last 5 episodes or so). But I agree, R2 wasn't really any worse than R1, outside of a few problems.

As for absolute favorite anime, I really don't have one. As I said earlier, for most of the anime I really like, I like the source manga even more, and my personal favorite manga (Jojos Bizarre Adventure and Pokémon Special) haven't even been adapted into anime outside of a short bit of Jojo that doesn't even cover my favorite parts of the manga. Code Geass probably wins for the anime that I enjoyed watching the most, though I keep finding niggling problems with it when I look back at it. Nothing too major, but it's very nitpick-prone.

[up]x6 The Black Knights holding the Idiot Ball, especially Ohgi, Kallen being effectively Put on a Bus for the most part, Rolo, Suzaku being even more of a douche, the use of spectacle over tactics, a nonsensical Evangelion-esque twist, the list goes on and on.

Twilight would probably be disqualified from Legends of the Hidden Temple. You know, teleportation and all.

@Lurker: Apparently they've greenlit a much more extensive anime for JoJo.

I REALLY don't get the Rolo hate, he was a great character. And his death sequence was incredibly moving.

@Red Really? Which part(s) is it covering?

[up]I really liked Rolo too, personally.

[up] I found that to be too little, too late. Not to say that it wasn't moving, but I feel as though he got a send-off that he really didn't deserve thanks to his crossing of the Moral Event Horizon.

He also never admitted that he was wrong in killing off Lelouch's love interest and trying to keep him from reuniting with his sister. I found him to just be a selfish brat.

I will admit that he got a touching send-off, but that doesn't mean I have to like him.

As I recall in SRW Z2, you can blow up the Damocles with Lelouch in it!

@I remember myself laughing when Lulu flipped his shit at Rolo.

@Lurker: I have no idea; I started the manga, but I only got up to Battle Tendency before I fell off, so I probably couldn't tell you anyway.

@L Dragon: doesn't matter to me that he didn't repent or anything. He wasn't a good person, he was a kid who was raised from birth to be a merciless assassin. He was so screwed up it would have been ridiculously unrealistic for him to suddenly turn around and become a good person. I don't like the character because he was good, he was just a very interesting character.

If I may be honest here... one area where I feel anime almost constantly succeeds over Western Animation is in the soundtrack department. Soundtracks are as important for me as Villains are for Ginger.

I mean, for example: I kinda-liked ATLA but I can't remember even one shred of music from it. It was all bland, and probably contributed to my "not really drawn in" feel. I feel this way about most cartoons, FIM being a notable recent exception.

By contrast, however...

Sorry if this seems one-sided but... well, I guess it is.

Welp, I actually have to totally agree with you there.

MLP has some good music, but I can't really remember any other cartoons with a decent soundtrack. Granted, I haven't seen that many.
Perpetual Lurker avatar
#254949
@Moe Really? I've heard nothing but praise for ATLA's soundtrack. Most of western animation's BGM isn't fully composed pieces like most anime is, but instead shorter, more variable snippets that focus on being atmospheric rather than standing out. Its perfectly valid, IMO, but it doesn't exactly give you listening material for outside of the show.

Typically, I find that I have to go back to the early 1990s or the 1980s to find cartoons with decent soundtracks.
