Ghost in the Shell was interesting, but nowhere near as interesting as it thought itself to be. It has some really cool implications for gender politics, moreso than it did for the strength of its story, but overall it was just alright.
I have not seen Spirited Away yet. This shames me to no end.
It's highly overrated. But then again I kind of dislike all Miyazaki movies.

I see. The TV series, Stand Alone Complex, actually as a lot more in terms of themes and action. I strongly recommend it. It is almost comparable to Cowboy Bebop.
Also, I still need to watch the Kara no Kyoukai movies.
Nah, I still find Rei to be my one and only waifu. Especially in the Rebuild series. I so want to marry her, fictional or not.

Anime huh?
All I can say is, people who haven't seen or read Ranma 1/2, have not lived.
Well... I could say more than that, but I don't want to risk starting controversy with yet another "why I think anime does it better than western animation" speech.
It's highly overrated. But then again I kind of dislike all Miyazaki movies.
You too eh? I thought I was the only one.
Only Castle of Cagliostro, Nausicaa and Castle in the Sky really did it for me. After that, I have no use for him.
re: Ghost in the Shell SAC - I liked it up until it revealed the truth about the Laughing Man.

@Blue: My Internets. Get off of them.
In all seriousness, yes, Miyazaki films do get hyped far beyond what they should realistically be expected to bear up under, but in my opinion, they're still quite solid films - and, of course, beautifully hand-animated.
@Dragon: Y'know, I have been meaning to watch it. I think you'll enjoy Kara no Kyoukai, too - it's a mindfuck, that one.
@Dragon Well, actually, yeah I agree with you. I just wanted to shoo away any of the "If you think she's cute you're completely missing the point of her" crowd. Rebuild > original series too. Too bad the US won't get the last two until 2014-2016.

I like both the Ghost in the Shell movies, but the first SAC series (never saw 2nd Gig) pissed me off SO much with its ending. Seriously, the final episodes ruined the entire show for me.
So I guess I should say "anime does it better... some of the time."
I still don't personally distinguish between western and eastern animation. It's all cartoons to me. Why should art style and country of origin supersede genre in terms of classification? But eh, we've been down this road before.

x4 Well, she is cute in my opinion, alien or not. However, my love for Rei is more thanks to the fact that her whole development of becoming a true human capable of free thought and emotion, culminating with her sacrificing herself to destroy the 16th angel, very touching. That's why she is my one and only fictional crush.

@Mio: Granted, granted. I'd definitely say that some Ghibli films are more about ideas than characters.

@L Dragon - for what its worth, personally I consider Ranma 1/2 the best anime and manga ever created. You might say I judge every other anime (or hell, cartoon) by how it compares to Ranma.
My second favorite used to be Dragon Ball, but lately I've been thinking of switching it out with Gensoumaden Saiyuki
I may check it out. It is only 18 episodes.
I find it kind of irritating if I am trying to complete a series, only to find that is has 100+ episodes.

I'm glad your standards are no where near universal.
@Lurker: Frankly the distinction has more to do with the Animation Age Ghetto then anything else, at least initially. Now it's more just out of tradition.
Isn't Ranma an extremely goofy comedy series, though? How are you supposed to compare something darker or more serious to it? Or something that wasn't nearly as much of a Long Runner?
