I draft my games and mostly play freeware and classics and goodies from SEGA and Nintendo. Capcom might well have lost me as a customer after sacking Inafune.

...Is there any chance SNK will re-release a minimized Neo Geo with all the Metal Slugs?

I find that with today's games, there's no good middle-of-the-road between "casual" and "hardcore." They're either so casual that they're completely worthless and little better than gambling (most "party games" for example) or they're so hardcore that you need to dedicate yourself body and soul to them (practically every modern RPG or FPS or whatever).

This is basically the exact opposite of my feelings on modern games. I don't know much about casual games since I usually don't play them but the few I have played were addicting and actually quite fun and inventive. Modern Rpgs, FPSES, and basic action adventure games that are so common nowadays are usually extremely simple and easily beatable by just about anyone who's willing to take the time to slog through them, so I definitely wouldn't call them hardcore. Actual hardcore games, games with a deep, challenging but fair difficulty curve, are very rare.

As for my age. I'm 23 while Colin's 20.

How in the hay does that work?

One of my dreams is to open an arcade and laser tag arena.. but not one of those wussy laser tag games where you stand on either side of a line and shoot... but one of the old school areneas where you gotta hunt people down.

I'd have a nice old school arcade in there too, and maybe a food stand. I wanted to have a Bar for adult nights but my boyfriend says thats a bad idea having drunk people running around playing laser tag.

I love those, turtle.

Oh god, don't watch MGMT's video for Kids when drunk, it's kinda disconcerting.

Yeah, Andromeda is heading for you. You got over 9000 years until it collides.

so, I'm archiving, and I came across the Dr. Whooves and Assistant audio drama videos on youtube. There went a good hour or so of the day...

? I've never heard of lazer tag involving standing at a line. Both times I've done lazer tag, it involved being put in a big, maze like room.

@Kyler Gang Garrison 2, my friend.

I agree with Colin on why people look up on old games so much. As for Banjo-Kazooie, I actually don't think it's as good as people say. It's a good game, but it has a few fatal flaws that keep it from true greatness.

@Ace and Moe: Y'all aren't that young though (well, actually, I'm not sure about Ace). I'm talking the like 12 to 16 year olds, the kids that grew up playing modern games. How do they even come across retro stuff, let alone get into it?

Well, if their parents or owners are worth their salts, they'll introduce kids to classic games.

I always took my Raydence to the arcades every weekend. Made sure he played the classics. He likes those RPG games though. Hmph.

For me the main drawback of Banjo is that it's too dependant on the old collect-a-thon.

Gex, that does not look like TD. I wanted TD.

The fact that the game neglected to keep the notes you collected when you left the level really got on my nerves. There's also some really not fun platforming sections in a few levels.

[up]I thought that you misspelled 2D. I don't know what TD is.

Quality is pretty evenly spaced across all gaming eras, IMO. For example, my favorite game of all time is in no way retro, but my second favorite game of all time is. And I also believe that many long running franchises have only improved with their age, like Mario and Pokemon. As for the RPG issue, my personal favorite non-pokemon RPG's that I've played are both Game Boy Advance games (Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and Golden Sun) which puts them in that nebulous position between retro and modern.

The note thing can be irritating, but I kind of view it as a challenge.

As for platforming, I'm not a big fan of the Rusty Bucket bay Engine Room or trying to retrieve Nabnut's nuts.

@Kyler: TD? You play tower defense games too?

For me, balance is everything in a TD game.

When it comes to comparing retro games to modern games, I think that the advantage that retro games have is uniqueness. Even the lowliest Sonic ripoff could be recognized by a screenshot alone, but you need a guide to tell the difference between MW3 and BF3.

Everything is too gritty-realistic in many modern games. At least the Serious Sam prequel kept the over-the-top zerg rushes.

That's really more a problem with FPS games than anything else.

I'd argue there are just as many current games that are unique, Gex. Just look at something like Achron or Iji. True, Iji's graphic design was influenced by Another World, but it remains its own unique game thematically.

@Ace There's certainly a place for gritty shooters, though. You just have to apply Sturgeon's Law to it like everything else. Personally, I found Call of Duty: Black Ops to have one of the best stories in a shooter in recent years.
