@Bluespade - I may be biased due to being born in the early 1980s, but...

Classic games were just better, is all. RP Gs were quicker, more to-the-point and didn't require you to learn how to use complicated junctions or field-alignment-systems just to swing a sword at the enemy. We had arcade games that were very pick-up-and-play, and soundtracks that get stuck in your head.

I find that with today's games, there's no good middle-of-the-road between "casual" and "hardcore." They're either so casual that they're completely worthless and little better than gambling (most "party games" for example) or they're so hardcore that you need to dedicate yourself body and soul to them (practically every modern RPG or FPS or whatever). Games like Secret of Mana, where it was very easy to grasp but you could still experiment and find nuances, are very rare these days.

But again, I may be just a smidgin biased.

@Moe: For modern shooters that aren't Serious Sam or Borderlands or Bioshock, they all look too similar. Give me back my Doom and System Shock and such [lol]

Also seconding the casual thing, but at least Tower Defense is a way to kill time when you just want to think ahead at a leisurely pace and be like an Engineer.

Humans still play video games? Really? Last time I was in Humania, all the arcades shut down.

This is Colin saying, "This, this so much." And now back to Orion.
Yeah, Andromeda is heading for you. You got over 9000 years until it collides.

@Ace and Moe: Y'all aren't that young though (well, actually, I'm not sure about Ace). I'm talking the like 12 to 16 year olds, the kids that grew up playing modern games. How do they even come across retro stuff, let alone get into it?

Anyway, I have to strongly disagree that old games were better. More challenging, generally, which is definitely something I hope that modern games return to, but old school games are mostly inferior in a vast number of ways. But this is a pony thread so I'm not gonna start a debate on that topic.

[down] I'm 26.

Oh, we're doing the age thing again? 24.

As for video games, I think both old and new games have their strong points. You just have to know where to look for them. I mean, yeah, a lot of modern games are samey, but then again the early game systems had Action52...

I pick my games so carefully that all these problems you have with modern games I do not encounter. All Legend of Zeldas, Tales of Symphonia, Skies of Arcadia, Oblivion, Okami, Skyrim, Arkham Asylum, Minecraft, Pokemon, The World Ends With You, Megaman ZX, Custom Robo, are nothing like how you describe.

But the. I get everything so late I'm always aware of what I'm going to like before I get it.

Oh I'm 20 and my first console was the Nintendo 64 and I've been on a linear Nintendo console and handheld path ever since.

An SNES? Wow. I think I still have mine. Still have my PS2 and Dreamcast too. Though I didn't get the dreamcast 'til 04 or 05. Whenever Funcoland was closing up shop.

I may be a pony where all we have are arcades, but I think the reason why "old games are better than new" is because you remember the good parts of the old while forgetting the bad parts. However, in today's games, both the good and the bad are fresh in your minds.

As for my age. I'm 23 while Colin's 20.
