That said: hubby didn't get spoiler'd (he likes the show, from what I can tell, but heaven forbid anyone got the idea that he's a brony or anything); he still caught on that something was genuinely wrong when Queen Chrysalis's power aura didn't match real!Cadance's. (After all, Shining Armor's excuses for Cadance's behavior were actually pretty feasible.) However, his guess was a garden-variety Face Heel Turn, not an impostor.

As a whole, I am so, so pleased with the finale. I wasn't sure about how it started off, but the second half in particular was amazing.

Yeah, we did see that Cadence's magic was a different color in her introduction! I hardly even noticed. But it was still pretty easy to tell that something was wrong from how sickly green is never a good sign, especially when it doesn't match your color scheme. I thought she was corrupted somehow and, after being corrupted, started using her special talent to brainwash Shining Armor. I didn't expect her to be a complete fake.

This, coming from someone who saw in passing a reference to evil mane six clones. I expected a different origin for those too.

Also, VILLAIN SONG FUCK YES.

I completly agree with you. "This Day Aria" is now my favorite song in the series. Seriously though, this episode is just fantastic. I've also learned to Never trust a trailer as well.

I know, right? It was completely different from what I was expecting and absolutely wonderful for it. I was not expecting a changeling plot, and I actually liked the real Cadence even though it would've been easy to make her so saccharine and dull. Plus the big brother song made me think of my own brother, and I got a little teary-eyed.

Sorry to doublepost, but the episode made me decidd to crack open some vodka out of happiness. I love you guys, man. And I'm totally not just saying that, you're the best. Inane's wonderfully witty sass, Japanese Teeth's episode reviews, amazing voice and bass playing, Carcio's fuddy-duddy yet sophisticated sense of humor, Accela's blueness and god-tier pony making skills, Rainbow Mat''s action hero Moe-ness, and the wesome thing everyone here does that I don't even have time to type truly mak us the best fandom the internet shall ever know.

So, one of many thoughts I had about the finale (other than, "holy shit awesome!"):

I thought that inversion of the "protagonists mistake evil copies of each other for the real thing in a fight" trope was actually really clever. Then I realized that I'm pretty sure I've never seen that particular inversion performed before. Has anyone seen that before? It seems like something that would be obvious to do, but it honestly took me completely by surprise — I was completely ready for them to play it straight.
