Well I have read about carnivorous horses and cows, but the setting of FIM just doesn't mix with that idea.

Except pig manure is typically injected into the soil so the farmers don't pass out from the stench, and I'm not sure the Apples have the implements for that.

At least they don't use pony manure, since that usually has undigested weed seeds.

Well, it might be possible to assume that ponies are simply taking care of domesticated animals just like they do about wild ones, since animals in this setting cannot do anything by themselves. Why do sheep need to be corralled, though?
If we disagree, that much, at least, we have in common

[up]Maybe it's for protection from carnivorous animals.

...The ponies are most certainly vegetarians.

One thing that does jump out at me is the show's tendency to not fall into "main characters will win every competition except when they need to learn humility." Kind of refreshing to see second place being met with "yeah, alright."
Indeed. Like that competition between Applejack and Rainbow Dash. To show that Twilight Sparkle had a point there, they didn't make her first in the race, but fifth. Which was realistic and good.

I still did have to raise my eyebrow a bit at how team Sweetie Belle just about dominated every individual section of the race. Though granted, they were only compared to teams that did not-very-well at each part.
I took a guess and cut a portion out of my heart.
He said, "That's nowhere close enough, but it's a damn good start."

I think it was mostly done to highlight how well Sweetie Belle and Rarity do as a team, and as a good way to show how much Rarity cares about her sister.

Yeah I'm not sure how much spoilers hide when the name we're expecting is about twice the length of the only other character in the episode tongue

Maybe it's for protection from carnivorous animals.

Well sure, if they're consistently foiled by a shoulder-high wooden fence.

No, I was in a sort of lounge area in my dorm watching ponies, and one of the people from my floor (which is pretty much inhabited by really manly men) asked me what I was watching, so I told him it was My Little Pony Friendship is Magic, so he laughed and walked off. Then, maybe 15 minutes later, he was walking by, and he stopped to ask me about it, and where he could see it.

@Pigeon: People can be divided into two groups these days;

Those who watch MLP:Fi M, and those who have yet to see it.

I just started watching this today after reading these forums got me feeling a little pony-curious. Something struck me as kind of dark: the ponies clearly organize themselves into various castes, distinguished by their features.

For example, the "normal" ponys both have peasant labor sort of jobs - Sweetapple is a farmer and does mostly manual labor, and Pinkie Pie helps run a bakery - not exactly glamorous careers, but somebody has to do them. The "unicorn" varieties seem a bit more upper crust - Rarity runs a boutique and decorating service and has access to expensive jewels and valuable silk clothing, and Twilight is a wizard/aclhemist and trusted member of the queen's court. They are nobility, in other words. "Pegasus" types like the one with the rainbow whose name I can't remember also seem to be something like the "warrior" caste, though Fluttershy kind of breaks that mold a bit as she acts more like an ecologist (so maybe its the "Warrior Poet" caste, with Fluttershy being more of a poet than a typical warrior). "Royal" types are either combinations of pegasus and unicorn or unicorn - I have yet to see a "wealthy" pony that lacked either wings or a horn. This ranking system doesn't seem to apply to other species.

And now I have analyzed the socioeconomic conditions of a planet populated by sapient ponies.
