I thought Pinkamena Diane Pie was just Rule of Funny.

I have come up with a bit of alliteration for that Polka is Magic video.

-Clears throat-

It's a plethora of playful ponies prancing to a polka piece.
Tick Tock, goes the clock/ He cradled and he rocked her/ Tick Tock, goes the clock/Till River kills the Doctor.

[up][up]That's...probably the case, But I've always held that every detail divulged is a legitimate one. And Faust herself has tried hard to explain every odd little detail...granted, she's also said not to hammer the logic to hard, but she still treats everything as real in-universe.

Pie could just be a naming convention they decided to adopt.

Just because one family decides to take a last name doesn't mean they all do.

This is a world where many ponies are named after cutie marks that aren't going to appear until years later, so naming in general is weird in Equestria. But it definitely seems like there aren't any set rules for naming, some families just choose to follow a specific theme.

Which ponies are named after their cutie marks anyway?

Twilight: I'm not sure how she got that name.

Rainbow Dash and Pinkie: Physical characteristics

Applejack: Family theme.

Rarity: Its a pretty name for a pretty pony! - said her parents. I guess.

Fluttershy: Some forsight there, unless they just tacked on something with "flutter" since she is a pegasus.

I once read a fanfic where Fluttershy's birthname was Flutterby, but then she met Rainbow Dash and Dash started calling her Fluttershy as a nickname and it stuck.

I take that as my own personal bit of Fanon.

Well the main ponies aren't, but some of the side characters are, like Silver Spoon and Diamond Tiara. What are those cutie marks supposed to mean, besides being a reference to their own names? wild mass guessIf you are a useless asshat with no special skills you get a generic name based cutie mark.wild mass guess

Diamond Tiara could be a jeweler, was one person's theory I heard. As for Silver Spoon...she's really lucky? You know, born with the silver spoon in your mouth = born into money = born lucky?

It's certainly a better thought than that your special talent is that you are someone skilled's daughter.

Actually, on that note, the cutie mark isn't tied to one's talent - it's stated to be tied to what you want to do with your life...can a cutie mark change? The culture would seem to keep that from happening, but still...

I wondered that.

I also wondered, what happens if you don't have a definite goal or particular talent? Do you remain markless forever (like the old pony with the goatee, perhaps)? If so, that's kinda depressing, seeing how cutie marks are apparently regarded as a sign of maturity there.

Perhaps, ponies can change names if they want to, and it is traditional — albeit not compulsory — to do that after you get your mark?

Hmm, this sort of reminds me of Haibane Renmei. I smell a WMG here, or perhaps a crossover if one has not been already made...

or maybe parent's sometimes name their kids after what they want them to be - like, if a ponies name was, I dunno, 'All Better', You don't have many options beyond health care, now do you? Noone's going to go to a...actually, that's a bad example, any number of service careers can go with all better. But you get my point.

Argh, I actually spent five seconds wondering what a "pony name" for me would be then. No. Enjoying a show is fine, even if it is not targeted to your own demographics, but that way lies madness. Madness, I say! tongue

What would the cutie mark of a pony whose special talent is not having a special talent but being sort of okay at everything be? Or would they even have a cutie mark?

I took a guess and cut a portion out of my heart.

Reading Ponychan, I am surprised that people made cases for every mare and her mother for being Big Macintosh's girlfriend. Even Pinkie!
