It would be the easiest way for Earth Ponies and unicorns to reach the sky, yeah. Ponyville might really be a frontier village in its own way if it lacks an airport.

Well, it had railways back when Granny Smith was a young one, but they haven't moved past that yet, it seems. Maybe next season will see an official blimp port playset(TM).

Do you really need a large airport for an airship? I mean, modern airports are so big because planes need a lot of room to take off. An airship doesn't need a runway. It can just park itself and let passengers aboard. Ponyville could easily have an airport, it's just inconspicuous and out of the way.

There's also the possibility that airships are just a novelty. I personally like to think of the one in Sweet and Elite as a sort of luxury yacht, rather than an indicator of a common form of mass transit.

Morning everyone. Blimps and zeppelins are super cool.
I decided to watch the trippy boat sequence from Willy Wonka, and apparently the actors only knew their lines, and had no idea what the tunnel looked like or that Gene Wilder would start singing. Sounds terrifying.
