That's true. My personal canon (and subsequently my fic-canon) is that gryphons inhabit their own country, but that a significant population of them inhabit the Drackenridge Mountains to the west of Equestria. Gilda was abandoned by her parents after they taught her the rudiments of flight - not an uncommon thing at all in gryphon culture; the only unusual bit is that she was deposited at Flight School in Cloudsdale.
