It would make sense. Cheerilee is one of the smarter Ponyvillians that we've seen. Twilight would want some intelligent company every once in a while. I can see her getting carried away with it.

Like trying to hang out during one of Cheerilee's classes perhaps?

I would like to see Spike have some interaction with the Crusaders. He should get a break from being Twilight's assistant every now and then. He'd probably try to act all mature in comparison to them at first, but they'd wear him down and he'd end up having fun.

OMG, in that RP where I'm playing as Pinkie, I'm now having her pretend to be a noir style detective, and it's so fun/funny. What's great about it is that she's taking Dashie along with her and is ignoring all of her confused statements while doing her Private Eye Monologue

Although the last drawing you saw of mine must have been a while ago then. I have quite a few more 3D looking Twis (and a few of the other ponies) with much better shading jobs applied too.

Spike's intelligence levels seem hard to pinpoint. I think he's probably the smartest child in Ponyville, purely by virtue of being Twilight's assistant and needing to keep up with her.

If ever he did go to a normal school, I can imagine him getting bored because he's too smart for it. (It'd be sweet to see though, since we'd have proof that Spike is actually very smart)

Spike's education is probably pretty inconsistent. Yeah, I'm sure he picks up a lot by being Twilight's assistant, but that means he's mainly learning what she is, which is magic. How useful would that be to a dragon? The adult one's we've seen so far don't seem to have any magic. At least some of Cheerilee's lessons are probably things Spike isn't familiar with.
