And someone on Ponychan just posted
You are now realizing that the tension between Applejack and Rarity in Look Before You Sleep was really about Applejack's resentment towards her extended family

And I was all like "Heeeeyyy...That kinda makes sense!"

This episode had see absorbed right when Applejack started talking all fancy and never let me go until the end.

I always wondered why Fluttershy was so much more down to earth, so to speak, than everyone elsde with wings in this show.

Rarity and Twilight's stories were hilarious.

Oddly enough, I think Fluttershy is the one who really set off the whole sequence of events. Rainbow Dash was racing to defend her honor after all.

True.

I like how someone on Ponychan put it:

This just in. Rainbow Dash is responsible for EVERY SINGLE FUCKING thing in the plot of the entire series, INCLUDING THE BIRTH OF SPIKE.

Rainbow Dash is NOW officially a god.

I admit, I found that a bit contrived.

But it was worth it for the big ol' group hug at the end.

On the one hand all the flashbacks were funny, charming and delivered on the promise to let us see what makes ponies who they are. On the other hand obvious reveal is obvious. Overall one of the best episodes so far.

Also, does anyone else think that filly Fluttershy looks kinda emo (well as emo as a pink and purple pony can look)?

Purple? She's yellow.

I'll say she was certainly scrawny.

Oops, I meant to say yellow.

I wonder if we'll ever see Twilight or Pinkie's parents in the present. Also, I think this supports the idea that AJ and Big Mac were raised by their grandmother as we don't get to see her parents in flashback despite the fact that they would be just as devastated by their daughter leaving.

For some reason I had pegged Pinkie as an only child before this (well technically I thought she just popped into existence like some sort of incredibly happy and amiable glitch in the fabric of creation).

Although I have to wonder what the hell the purpose of a rock farm is.
WHY IS THERE A ROCK FARM?! WHY?!

I'm going with the explanation that on account of it being a story told to us by Pinky Pie (which ended with her saying 'and that's how Equestria was made!'), I think we're better off looking at her story from the point of an Unreliable Narrator or Broad Strokes.

I'd say the general basics of her story are accurate (such as her family being uptight amish types, the Sonic Rainboom inspiring her, and getting her mark through throwing her family a party), but beyond that I think we can interpret things like that her family had a 'rock farm' as a case of Pinky Pie being, well, Pinky Pie. After all, we also have her previous story from the second episode in the woods (told through song) that doesn't seem to entirely mesh with what we have here.

Long story short, don't take Pinky's story at face value.

That aside, while I thought the episode was cute, I get a sense I went in with over-hightened expectations since I'm not getting the same 'best episode ever' vibe that I expected based on the hype I read prior to watching it and that everyone else seems to be experiencing. My own fault, really.

She doesn't seem like the sort who would have any background. She's quite engimatic to me, probably because of her marked lack of depth compared to the rest of the main cast.

Or maybe the real truth is that Pinky Pie is a case of Multiple Choice Past. wild mass guess

Maybe it's a rock farm because Equestria is a weird place?

Maybe it's like a quarry?

Makes sense. Pinkie would be the type to misremember a quarry as a "rock farm".

And surely there has to be some place in Equestria with stone buildings. Like, say, the Ancient Castle of the Royal Pony Sisters?
But apart, all we are is just a pile of mush and some crumbly dry mess...

oh man.

OOOOH, MAN.

The cutest thing. Ever.

I'm pretty sure that as soon as that first flashback started I grinned the freakin' widest I've ever smiled - I spawned more teeth to accommodate that grin. and it did not stop, until the end - well, okay, until the start of rainbow dash's race, actually, when I spotted an earth filly in the crowds, but whatever.

Admittedly, I did kinda figure that the sonic rainboom would link them all together right from applejack's, but the corny message was still adorable - and they lampshaded it, which makes me happy. And, of course, Twilight being Adorkable is always great.

As soon as I saw the rainbow in Applejack's flashback I knew they would all be connected to Rainbow Dash's somehow, but knowing that didn't really bother me because the characters didn't know it yet. If that makes sense.

Is it me or did Fluttershy look a bit older than the others as a filly?

It would be kind of funny if Pinkie Pie was the second oldest in the group.

Re: Rock Farm.

Actually, I think I can buy that the rock farm is all a part of pony-based "nature". Rocks have to come from somewhere.

I loved when young Rarity ranted about the giant rock, and did anyone else think "Xavier" when Twilight mentioned Celestia's School For Gifted Unicorns?
