I don't call them dumb for Bird In The Hoof stuff. And that bird wasn't in any real danger anyway.

I find it strange that the Guards obeyed the Mayor's orders during the pilot. She's not in charge of them

Though maybe they were gonna rush NM anyway

[up] It's not strange if they would do this even if nopony ordered them to catch NM.

Did we ever find out what was so important that happened in that episode that the Mayor had to call the Princess away in the first place?

wild mass guessCelestria ordered Mayor to call her so she could ditch party and see what hapen to her "sick" bird.

I imagine Celestia and Luna don't have to concentrate on holding the sun or moon in place. That would be a huge strain on them, and it goes against the 'natural, but guided' principles that seem to govern the rest of Equestria.

Ginger: Well, with Celestia missing and there didn't seem to be any other officials from the castle there to take charge, I guess that made the mayor second in command?

Well, yeah, theft IS silly in that game, especially when you can do it by accident by clicking on the wrong spot and stuff. I once got killed for a loaf of bread!

Maybe they just get it started? Like they raise it and put it on its path, then pull it down at the end of the day? 'cause if they were constantly using magic to keep moving it, Celestia's horn would be glowing, wouldn't it?

I always figured it as a sort of toggling the "sun up/sun down" switch. I mean, we don't know if the sun moves across the sky like it does in real life, so it might just be that once it's up it just stays there.

As for the guards in the first episode, Celestia is kinda, you know, gone, so the Mayor is the highest present authority.

Have we ever seen twilight or predawn in the show? From the raising of the sun we saw in "Cutie Mark Chronicles", the sun goes up pretty high when Celestia raises it, though not unbelievably high for a sunrise. It could still move across the sky, is my point.

There's also this weird habit that the mayor has of planning for people to appear from behind curtains, even though they aren't there.

The first time is excusable, since Celestia was kidnapped without the mayor knowing (though the idea of her requesting that Celestia stand perfectly still bhind a curtain is certainly humorous)

The second time (Applebuck Season) made NO sense whatsoever. Applejack didn't even turn up before they realized that she wasn't behind the curtain. Who did they think was back there, and why didn't anyone check before the announcement started?

This show has a lot of instances of things being gone when a character opens something, whether it's curtains, or a box.

Some time ago I imagined that Patrick Stewart could voice Twilight dad.

Later I imaged that Jonathan Frakes voice TS dad and Marina Sirtis her mother. This could be even more memetic.

maybe I'm being too harsh on the guards but I still think it was kind of silly that they didn't think to go up and get her off the stature.

and I also think that Celestia and Luna just get the sun and moon started and finished.
