I've never heard flip-flops referred to as thongs before. Around here, "thong" means plot-floss underwear.

Funnily enough, I've always heard flip-flops and thongs used interchangeably where I grew up, and usually called those shoe-lace swimsuits g-strings.

I'd heard of flip flops originally being called thongs before that, but the only instance I can remember is from a Pickles comic where Opal complains that people are wearing thongs to church.
