The only actual evidence for Dinky's parentage actually points to Carrot Top, rather than Derpy, thanks to the crowd scene in SSCS6K. The fandom doesn't care though.

In addition, its hard to even have a compelling narrative when it has to be open-ended.

@Tigger The only major fanon upheaval I can think of was Luna's canonical personality. Prior to Luna Eclipsed, she was more or less always portrayed as Fluttershy-lite/The Woobie, often both at the same time.

@Steve Gamer Luna is a meme, though, not fanon. Same as Lyra's human/hands obsession. Fanon implies that people actually work it into their own interpretation of the canon.
