Celestia could probably just mass-teleport the parasprites back to the Everfree Forest. So the instruments would be unnecessary.

I can imagine her doing that to unwanted guests (just like Dr Manhatten)

I don't think that there was any troble in Philidelfia.
They are like the others. Strange, hideous, resisting, fighting. Only these were not like the others. They did not die.

I wonder if the people in Manehatten or Fillydellphia ever stop to think:

"Is it me, or does our town name sound like a lame pun on something? I mean who natrually comes up with names like that anyway?" [lol]

For some reason, I always imagined Ponyville being the Equestria's version of Nashville.

Ponyville is like Helsinki. It's not a big or important town, but everyone worth knowing lives there.

Forgive me for being a cynic, but is it really ok for BACKGROUND PONIES to have their own tropes page?

We know almost nothing objective about them, plus their limited personalities tend to change between appearances.

It's just the one page for the lot of them, and given the amount of attention they get from the fandom it isn't too unreasonable. Given the way the character pages are split there isn't really anywhere else for them, and we can't just remove them completely. Unless we wanted to limit them to the Ensemble Darkpony page.

There Is No Such Thing as Notability but fanon shouldn't go in there

It's important if only because of the importance of fanon to the show. I mean, Derpy and Lyra are comparably popular to the main cast, and pretty much all the bg ponies have a good amount of fanfic and fanart. If we want to inform people about why the show is as popular as it is, they should be included. Not sure if we need pages for animal companions or canon foreigners, though.

Manehattan.

I don't think it's excessive to have a page to keep track of notable background ponies, but I do think we'll have to be careful to avoid getting guerilla edit wars going on between fans of different interpretations as they put entirely subjective fanon on the page as fact.

[up][up] The animal companions have objective personalities, and are actual characters. The background ponies don't. They're purpose is to be extras. Extras don't have tropes in any other show. The names they're given don't even mean anything, since the fans named them.

Canon Foreigners should go too.

There are ways to emphasize the importance of background ponies to the fandom without giving them character pages.

I love Troy from Heavy Rain, but I don't expect him to get a trope page

I guess I just don't see the point in giving a character page to characters who aren't characters. (outside of the fandom)

Note their names, descriptions, popularity, basically their existence and that should be it. Everything else goes in Fanon.

Because they are characters within the fandom, and the fandom is a very important part of the show, especially in this case.

but I always thought this site was supposed to be about what goes on IN the actual show more than what goes on in the fandom.

Mentioning them is fine, but dedicating an entire page to them? seems a bit much, regardless of how important they are to the fandom.

Character pages should be about actual characters from the show's point of view

Well, I don't know, you can only get a few tropes for someone before it becomes entirely fanon.

That's because in real life, the leader of the country doesn't have the most powerful magic of anybody in the country. If say, Barack Obama had super strength or weather control powers or something, it would make perfect sense to call him in to help with a natural disaster.

Who says he doesn't?

Ginger, maybe you should come over to the Negima page annex and see our... JTeeth, what is it now, five full character sheets? We've broken the page several times, at the very least.

Anyway, I'm somewhat torn on the issue. On one hand, yes, the background ponies are (essentially) entirely fan-created characters; on the other, certain parts of those characterizations are so widely accepted that it doesn't feel right to exclude them. Like any official character, I can tell you that I'm writing a fic starring Lyra and you'll know fairly well how to expect her to act; the variance in terms of fan-created personalities for the background ponies tends to show around the same deviation as poor or inexperienced writers do in writing for the main cast, anyway. (Yes, I expect to be blasted for that...)
