Back from my walk (hello Turtlebutter). I came to an interesting realization while out walking:

Before I became an MLP fan, I wrote a fantasy novel. This novel did not contain a single horse, and had a justified explanation built into the plot to exclude the appearance of equines.

Now that I'm Brony, I'm writing another fantasy novel. So far horses have appeared several times and I've gone through the effort of giving them some rudimentary personalities. [lol]

I also realized during my walk that I am going to make my setting a lot more spell-punk than I had initially planned.

This book is helpful when writing about horses. Helps with the terminology and stuff.

@Condo: Which one?

My completed novel is about a young girl who accidentally is an accomplice to the death of her brother and is physically dismembered in the process. After recovering from her injuries, she trains in a special kind of magic, joins an organization dedicated to reclaiming the land from a curse which has corrupted most of the country, transforming it into a pitch black jungle of ever-growing plants and full of immortal monsters that slaughter anything natural. She grows tired of seeing friends die, climbs to the rank of Captain and puts together a special, small team of specialists with the explicit purpose of discovering a way to fight against the monsters with out constantly sacrificing soldiers. Just before the story begins, she recruits a young veteran who is extremely cynical and wholeheartedly considers himself to be just one more sacrifice waiting to be spent for the purpose of saving lives. She herself is very optimistic and idealistic, though her back story shows that she had to go through a lot to obtain that sort of philosophy.

The story I'm writing now is set in a huge empire centered around a system of magic based on music theory. The empire is explicitly peaceful, with no true wars having been fought in decades; instead, conflicts are resolved through the use of spies, intrigue, and political machinations. The protagonist is a young shopkeeper who has three older siblings, all of whom have gone out into the world and become powerful, influential people involved in a massive conspiracy. He of course gets roped into it too. It's got a similar feel to Full Metal Alchemist for those who've seen it.

[up] [up] Thanks butter.

Both stories sound cool. I'd like to hear more about them later, but my Avengers high is starting to wear off and I have to go to bed now. Catch ya later, guys.

Well I don't know if anyone is still willing to talk about it but I just caught up with Korra, and all I can really say is that this storyline needed a few more episodes of build up and actual relationship building with the team.

As of right now while I do enjoy it, but I just don't feel likes it's living up to its potential.

she recovers from being physically dismembered? Just how dismembered are we talking here?

[up][up]I completely agree. Also I feel like Bolin and Mako were kind of unnecessary to the story. I understand they wanted Korra to have a team to help her, but they should have been more integrated into the plot.

[up] Her arm is cut off at the elbow, the blade goes through the arm and cuts her across the chest too, creating a big scar. There's a scar on her face as well, from the same cut.

well I guess this special kind of magic doesn't involve too much finger waggling then.

The second one with the magic based on music theory sounds really cool Bluespade

Ive read a couple books about magic that was based on computer language, The Wiz Biz and Broken Crescent were the titles.

My boyfriend always tells me about a book he read where the less people that knew a language was the more powerful it was when used to do magic. Some kids from our world got sent to this world somehow, and their knowledge of computer language made them the most powerful wizards in the land. I haven't been able to figure out what book this was though, I've searched for a while.

I always appreciate new takes on magic that go beyond the usual stuff like elemental or necromancy or something.

Anyway.. I'm tired and my show is over so I'm going to bed.

I wrote that story in particular after writing out a long list of fantasy story cliches I wanted to make sure I either avoided entirely or subverted in some form or fashion. So I wanted to have the protagonist be an experienced, knowledgeable woman who was explicitly not a combatant. I thought it would be interesting to have her be physically handicapped as well.

[up]Yeah I think the magic-as-music thing is a cool concept that should help me actually get an agent interested in picking it up. Anyways, good night.
