I think Nightmare Moon also got overconfident. If she was going to stop them, the time to do it would have been during the speech about what each of them embodied. But she was sure that the sixth element wouldn't appear.

I'm almost positive that the only way ANY of these big name villains can lose is due to overconfidence. Power-wise they can probably kill the mane cast with a thought, they just choose not to because they underestimate them.

Yet another reason why they should stop using god like villains (I grudgingly have to admit)

Better to use villain who are equeal in power to Celestria or little weaker.

re:villains: It would be interesting to have a foil/rival antagonist, as mortal as they are, but more dangerous in an everyday, ruin-your-reputation sense. Oh, I dunno, like a rival designer who becomes instant enemies with Rarity after losing out on a deal with a celebrity, and takes it too personally?

no. Because Celestia is STRONGER than the mane cast by a considerable margain.

What we need are villains who are stronger than the mane cast, but not to the point where the only way to defeat them hinges on their own idiocy

Why Celestria can't defeat some big baddy ? Mane Cast could be focused on stoping their evil plans or army.

I whant Celestria to kick some plot.

^An army would be a little dark for the series proper. As much as I'd also like to see Celestia (and Luna) locked in a life-or-death struggle against a dangerous enemy and kicking ass, it wouldn't fit the tone of the show.

Anyone have a link to that comic where an enterprising pear seller tries to set up shop in Ponyville? That's the first thing I thought of when someone mentioned a more mundane rivalry.

@Red: Yeah, I've actually had it for a few years, but there was only like one thing on it until like 3 weeks ago.

I might go through and review the new episodes as they happen, or maybe go through season one. It basically depends on how much work grad school dumps on my head in the next few weeks. I would love to keep it up, but Real Life has a way of screwing that up.

One idea that got tossed around was Luna taking on her own apprentice, who starts up a rivalry with Twilight. I think it would be interesting.

^Yes. That would also include a much larger budget, too - apparently the creative team is working on a fairly shoestring budget for the most part.

I just wanna see Celestia show off some of her supposedly impressive power. Not even in the context of a fight. Her levitating the entirety of ponyville to save it from something would be sufficiently awesome.

I'll throw my money at them when the DVD comes out. Which will hopefully be soon. Not sure how I'll go about explaining it to my parents, though.

Only if the rivalry was a choice of the apprentice, and not done at Luna's urging. I don't see Luna holding a grudge against Twilight. Heck, I've got a feeling she feels indebted to Twilight and her friends, for freeing her.

I was thinking more along the lines of Twilight getting jealous of it, having previously been the only royal apprentice. Celestia and Luna would be more just watching the thing unfolding, and eventually Twilight learns a lesson about Jealousy or not having to be the best at everything, or whatever.

Also, is anybody else curious about whether the fact that the mane cast are now celebrities is going to effect the rest of the season? I could kinda see say, Photo Finish coming back to beg Fluttershy to start modeling again, or the Wonderbolts asking Rainbow Dash to do a guest appearance or something.
