So Scootaloo showed up in her house, and I immediately wondered if we were going to see her parents... Then she referred to the mare I thought was her mother as 'doctor', so that was a bust.

Earth Ponies don't need warfare, they can starve the Pegasi. The Pegasi need the Earth ponies because an army marches on its stomach. They could probably eat grass but for how long? They wouldn't be able to do sweeping battles but Earth Ponies would win in a long drawn out war.
