Ah, Ayane's High Kick, one the first sub-par animes I was ever exposed to.

AJ and RD would be good boxers, for different reasons. AJ=Endurance, strength. RD=Speed, Agility.

I know. It's bad, but I still wish they would have continued it. It had that cheesy awesomeness you can only get from old anime.

When I realized emotions are the source of magic in the show.

Friendship brings out positive emotions hence why so many positive attributes are associated with it in the show.

@Chad: Nah, kickboxing doesn't have any wrestling, does it?

Anyways, I write Hoops as an ex-boxer in my blog. My theory is he got pretty goo and standing on his back hooves because of his wings, for added balance. That, or they just do little jump punches.

Also, they have to pull their punches hard. Hooves like there's have this sort of snap strength - it's part of how they run so fast, I think. But most ungulates have it. A giraffe can kick a lion's head off.

I think unicorn magic is basically Vancian in nature. Magicians create spells that are performed a certain way and have a specific effect. No emotion involved, only skill. Twilight and other skilled magicians can probably cast unknown spells on the fly, but it's probably very difficult.

I think that is what ponies mean when they talk about magic. By their standards, Pegasus weather powers and Earth Ponies cultivation powers aren't magic, just natural abilities.

Also Berry's probably just in one of his depressed moods. Probably drinking too. I really worry about him sometimes.

Well hopefully he'll show up so we can talk to him. That's the bad thing about being internet friends... you can't exactly go knock on their door...

@Blue it was mostly relating to the Elements Of Harmony and the power of love.

Could a unicorn (or any pony) use other emotions to power their magic? Are other emotions usable in the same way those two are?

Ok, I should have actually read the Vancian Magic page before I posted that. Unicorn spells don't actually have to be prepared ahead of time. But I recently watched Feeling Pinkie Keen and Twilight (literally) got up on a soapbox to lecture about the nature of magic, and she was pretty clear that it is a purely mental/will thing. I don't think emotional power is necessary, but it likely could be channeled for extra effect.
